Why We Dance: Personal Reasons and Motivations
Dance is a universal expression, rich in diversity, with each individual and community engaging in it for unique reasons. Some people dance to perfect their technique and perform, while others immerse themselves in the sheer joy of movement. Our personal dance practices evolve from our interests, abilities, and the influences of fellow dancers, ultimately shaping our health and well-being.

The decision to pursue a particular dance style and maintain the practice often stems from a mix of internal and external motivations. Internally, people dance because it brings them joy, fulfillment, and a sense of well-being. Externally, motivations can include obligations for school, work, social approval, or even medical advice.

Supporting people in discovering personally meaningful reasons to dance can enhance their health and well-being. Surveys reveal varied motivations among non-professional dancers. For instance, Nieminen (1998) found that Finnish dancers in modern, ballet, folk, and ballroom styles had diverse motives. Quiroga Murcia et al. (2010) noted self-perceived benefits among German-speaking European dancers, primarily in folk, ballroom, and disco styles. Maraz et al. (2015) identified motivations among Hungarian salsa and ballroom dancers.

Each of these studies, despite their differing methodologies, highlights the importance of personal motivation in dance practice. Encouraging individuals to find their own reasons for dancing can lead to sustained engagement and greater benefits.

Dance: A Multisensory Experience
Dance is more than just movement—it's a visual and multisensory experience that communicates through the body. While music and dance share evolutionary roots, they often separate in Western cultures, with music engaging our ears and dance captivating our eyes. However, dance's impact reaches beyond the visual.

Aesthetic pleasure in dance comes from a fusion of perceptions, creating a physical enthusiasm and deeper embodiment. Studies show that observing dance activates the same brain regions as performing it, enhancing our kinaesthetic empathy and physical experience of the movements.

Research from the "Watching Dance" project reveals that our enjoyment of dance is influenced by our movement experience, with brain activation peaking when observing complex and aesthetically pleasing moves. This connection highlights how dance expertise enhances both motor imagery and the multisensory appreciation of dance.

Stay Young, Dance On!

Dancing isn't just for the young—it's a key to staying young at heart. Studies show that dancing can combat the challenges of aging, such as declining health, balance, and social connections, while keeping the brain sharp.

In a 2007 study, 60 elderly Brazilians took ballroom dance classes for a year. They reported improved balance, flexibility, coordination, and a renewed sense of playfulness and relaxation. Dance not only reminded them of their youth but also reconnected them with their culture.

For Parkinson’s patients, dance has shown remarkable benefits. A 2014 study revealed that participants experienced improved moods and less anger after learning dances like the Charleston. Similarly, a 2012 study with dementia patients and their caregivers found that weekly circle dance classes improved quality of life, health, memory, and relationships.

Dance transcends mere exercise—it offers confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of freedom. So, why not embrace the dance floor? After all, dancing is your human birthright.

What dance style will you try next to stay young at heart?
