If you’re going to trust someone to sit alongside your child and gently untangle the tricky parts of their learning journey, it helps to know the actual person who is working with them. Beyond the session plans and learning goals, I’m a mum and a teacher, who genuinely cares so much about making learning feel safe, achievable and fun.

If you feel like sharing something about yourself or the things we have in common, I’d love to hear it.

Thank you for being a part of my community 🩵

Gosh I enjoyed this morning’s writing session.

Taking the time to learn about my students and what they are interested in pays off tenfold.

Yes, I have to teach them letter formations, spelling rules and structures, and I can’t be too flexible with those things. But what I can be flexible with is the topic!

This morning we wrote an information report about jet planes. Watching my student’s eagerness to get his ideas down on paper reminded me exactly why student-centered learning matters 🩵

Ever heard of non-standard partitioning?

It’s one thing to know that 161 is 100 + 60 + 1 (standard partitioning). But there’s a deeper understanding in knowing that 161 can also be 100 + 50 + 11 or 100 + 40 + 21.

Non-standard partitioning of 3 digit numbers is a concept taught in year 2. It really stretches their little brains 🧠

This learner worked so hard on this concept. At first, it was tricky. But by playing a fun game that kept her engaged and enabled her to practise the same skill over and over, her understanding and confidence grew. What an absolute superstar! ⭐️

When you see your child’s school report, you’ll see a mark for English. But behind the scenes, teachers (including us at Brisbane Tuition) are also looking at something even bigger. The Literacy General Capability.

The Australian Curriculum defines Literacy as a General Capability for a reason. It’s because literacy doesn’t live in a bubble. It’s the thread that runs through every single thing your child does at school.

In Maths, it’s the ability to decode a worded problem before they can start solving the problem.

In Science, it’s understanding the specific vocab of an experiment.

In HASS, it’s being able to read a map.

Even when ordering our tuckshop, we need to read and comprehend the menu before interacting with someone (or navigating an app) to order.

If a child’s literacy skills are not solid, every other subject and task feels heavy and hard.

At Brisbane Tuition, we’re not just doing homework. Although we can definitely help with this if that’s what you need! We are using the Literacy General Capability to guide our instruction to empower your child across every subject and task at school.

We think this is pretty powerful stuff 😍🩷

I LOVED being a classroom teacher. So very much. But I always wished for the luxury of more time. I wanted the capacity to sit with every student for those long meaningful stretches, where I could tap into each of their interests, to make the learning as relevant to them as possible.

I’ve now found a way to do this.

I love my work so much 🩷

In our sessions, we spend time learning how a letter is formed, not just what it looks like. Whether a student is using a pencil, chalk on the carpet, or a finger in shaving cream, the way we form our letters matters.

Correct formation isn't just about being neat. It's about efficiency. When letters flow naturally, writing becomes fluent and automatic. This frees up a student's brain to focus on their ideas, rather than how to write each letter. When writing feels slow and tedious, it takes the joy out of writing and becomes an onerous task.

Of course, writing is not just pencil to paper. I work with students who use alternative tools to communicate their ideas and the goal is still the same: to make the process efficient so their ideas can be communicated and celebrated.

At the end of the day, we want to make writing easier for our kids so they can focus on their amazing ideas. This starts with the correct foundations ✏️🧡
