This post from the Embassy of Angola means a great deal to me and our community.
What began as a love of Kizomba and Semba became a love of Angola itself, its people, history, music, food, resilience, generosity and culture.
Over the years, many Angolans have welcomed us, taught us, corrected us, inspired us and shared pieces of their culture with us. We are deeply grateful for that generosity and trust.
My hope is that more people in Australia can experience and appreciate the richness of Angolan culture in a respectful and genuine way.
Thank you to the Embassy of Angola for believing in this work, and to every Angolan who has opened their heart and home to us.
To everyone building this community with respect and love.
Muito obrigada đđŒ

Iâve been reflecting on the last 12 years of learning and immersing myself in Kizomba and its history.
Things have shifted for me over time as I began to feel the music in my body more .

đŠđŽ Semba Lives Inside Kizomba, they are family đȘđ¶
These are just a few words to touch on a very extensive subject đđŒ
Music all over the world has always been a way to express feeling, a way for people to have a voice. Semba music is about cultural identity and resistance.
Kizomba has its roots in Semba, the music, and is also shaped by Zouk. Itâs about the vibe, the feel of it, not about the speed. Itâs easy to think Semba is fast and Kizomba is slow, but this couldnât be further from the truth.
For many coming to this from the outside, it can seem simple at first, But the more you listen and learn, the more you begin to feel how much meaning sits underneath it.
Semba music helped shape the Kizomba universe we all love today.
It has brought people together near and far. It has also carried truth, and at times that truth came at a cost for the artists who expressed it.
And here we are, fortunate enough to be able to hear these songs and to dance this dance that means so much to so many.
Semba brings the play and joy, Kizomba brings the closeness, and together they give the dance its depth. The more you listen, the more you will discover its beauty.
đȘ You donât need to choose between Semba and Kizomba. Here is a little Semba list, have a listen and see if you can fall in love with one song and name it in the comments.

A beautiful gem from Angolaâs musical history đŠđŽ
Lourdes Van-Dunem, affectionately known as Tia Lourdes, performing with the legendary NâGola Ritmos for RTP in 1964.
Founded by âLiceuâ Vieira Dias, this group carried the spirit and resilience of a generation, even through repression and the imprisonment of two of its founders, Amadeu and Liceu.
At this time, the group was kept alive by Nino, Fontinhas, XĂŽdo, ZĂ© Cordeiro, Lourdes, and GĂ©gĂ© â true guardians of Angolan music.
A timeless performance to remember â€ïž
