Mount Ommaney Special School

It has been exciting to watch our G Hub students jump straight back into their Literacy routines this Term. From the start of the year, the children have been introduced to the Shared and Dialogic reading structure which has been implemented throughout the school.
Our little ones have been focusing on early concepts of print, vocabulary, comprehension and increasing engagement with texts. We have used a range of texts based on the children’s interests to foster a love of books and an interest in text. Sensory and play based activities have been designed to extend the children’s interest and encourage a response to what they have read.
Throughout this process we have watched our children enjoy storytelling with puppets, props and interactive sensory play trays. They have constructed their own sentences choosing words to add to sentence starters using their individual talkers or Alternative Language Displays (ALD’s) and been part of the process of writing class books. These class books have now become the books of choice during quite reading time.
What a joy it has been to see their faces light up as they find their own page with self-selected words and letters and a photo of themselves as authors.

School Opinion Survey The School Opinion Survey is a suite of surveys undertaken each year by the Department of Education to obtain opinion information from parents/caregivers, students and school staff.

We love seeing our year 6 and 12s proudly wearing their named polos and jerseys around the school. Grateful thanks to Ken from who generously donates his time, polos and jerseys every year and to the parents who were able to come along to be part of this special presentation event.

Wow! There has been an incredible amount of change at MOSS over the holidays. Even though we knew these changes were coming, it was still quite a shock to see just how much construction work has taken place over the break.

To help prepare our community as much as possible for Monday, we have created a social story that has been emailed to families, along with a short video showing the new bus set-down area and changes to the site.

MORE SPORTS DAY MEMORIES…!

Introducing Friends of MOSS
Many of our past students, along with their families, carers, former staff and volunteers, have shared a strong connection with MOSS over the years. The Friends of MOSS network offers an opportunity to reconnect, stay connected, strengthen those relationships and support the school beyond the school years. If you would like to become a Friend of MOSS, please get in touch with the school to complete a registration form.

This semester in the Certificate 1 in Access to Vocational Pathways students have completed a unit called Technology and Numeracy in the Workplace. The focus was to prepare and run a bake sale using digital technologies. As part of this unit students explored numeracy concepts including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, place value to thousands, measurement of mass and capacity and money skills. They have also explored digital technology and workplace standards of practice when using calculators, digital scales and the microwave. The class used Coles online to order the ingredients for their baked goods. They transitioned around the school and practised their communication skills to collect orders from staff. Students have prepared brownies and scones and will soon prepare blueberry muffins and chocolate chip cookies. The final step will be to deliver them to staff around the school and collect money using the EFTPOS machine. Students will then work out profit made after costs are taken into account. This is the third unit of competency of four, with the whole course being completed at the end of 2026.

Armed with tools and curiosity, Senior Secondary students at MOSS spent Term 2 learning the ins and outs of Computer Recycling. Students safely dismantled computers, iPads and other electronic devices, separating components for recycling and reuse. Through these hands-on experiences, students developed practical skills, problem-solving abilities, and an understanding of how responsible recycling helps reduce waste and protect the environment.

A highlight of Term 2 for many Senior Secondary students at MOSS was participating in Bike Washing. Students learned how to carefully clean and maintain bicycles, paying close attention to detail while following workplace routines and safety procedures. From muddy wheels to sparkling frames, students took great pride in seeing the results of their hard work. This practical program provided opportunities to develop teamwork, responsibility and confidence while completing meaningful tasks.
