Mount Ommaney Special School The Mount Ommaney Special School campus provides educational programs for learners with disabilities from birth through to their graduation from school.

The Mount Ommaney Special School campus provides educational programs for learners with disabilities from birth through to their graduation from formal schooling. Since 2012, the school is gradually expanding its role within the region to provide programs for the diverse range of learners, who meet the criteria for special school enrolment. As it has always done, the school continues to provide programs for school age children with high and complex support needs, as well as hosting an Early Childhood Development Program for students not yet of compulsory schooling age. While our school is located in the suburb of Mount Ommaney, we provide service to areas well beyond the Centenary suburbs. In line with its steady growth and expanding focus, the school is organised into four sectors or learning areas; early years sector, middle phase sector, senior school sector and intensive interaction sector.

🌱 A Very Special Milestone at MOSS! 🌱

In the middle of Term 3, we were thrilled to welcome the Education Minister and the Wiley Construction team to MOSS for a very special Sod Turning Ceremony, marking an exciting milestone in the development of our school’s future.

Our future Year 10 and 11 student leaders played a huge part in the ceremony. We were incredibly proud to see Luke and Fraser deliver the Welcome to Country, with Fraser also delivering a wonderful opening speech. All of our student leaders then had the opportunity to take part in the official sod turning and literally help turn the soil for the next chapter of MOSS. 👏

It was fantastic to see our young people representing our school with confidence, pride and enthusiasm. These are moments that create meaningful opportunities for our students to develop their leadership skills and be an important part of shaping the future of their school community.

A huge thank you to the Education Minister, Wiley Construction and everyone involved in helping make this such a memorable occasion.

What a night! Our Year 11 and 12 students had a fantastic time attending the Combined School Formal, enjoying an evening of dancing, telling jokes and celebrating alongside students from other schools.

The MOSS seniors certainly brought plenty of energy to the dance floor and proudly showed off their school spirit throughout the night. A definite highlight was when 500 Miles came on- our students knew exactly what to do! The dance floor came alive with plenty of singing, dancing and MOSS pride.

It was a wonderful opportunity for our senior students to celebrate together, build connections and make some great memories along the way.

Our senior students got straight to work during their visits to E-Waste Bundamba! Wearing the appropriate PPE and using tools such as screwdrivers, students safely took apart a variety of electronic equipment. They practised following workplace instructions, completing tasks safely and developing their confidence using different tools. These hands-on experiences gave students a fantastic taste of a supported workplace environment while building practical skills they can take with them beyond school.

On Wednesday, 2nd of September our Junior Secondary classes travelled to the Manly Foreshore to take part in the Darling Point Fun Run. It was a lovely sunny day for a walk, jog, run or roll. Students took the opportunity to chat with friends and enjoy the scenery which included the water, swans, people canoeing and some Mounted Police.
A huge congratulations to Hamish with help from his dad, who won the 13 years and over boys’ age group. A big congratulations to all of our students for embodying our PBL expectations while in the community.

There was no shortage of fresh air and adventure during Parks and Leisure! Senior students visited a variety of local parks where they explored new environments, participated in recreational activities and enjoyed spending time with their peers. Along the way, students practised identifying important community rules and responsibilities, making safe choices and using shared spaces appropriately. It was a great opportunity to combine learning with movement, social connection and plenty of fun.

All aboard! Our Senior Secondary students were out and about throughout Term 3, building their confidence using public transport and navigating the wider community. Students practised using Go Cards, identifying the correct bus or train, reading signs and timetables, recognising stops and following important rules when travelling. There was plenty of real-world problem-solving along the way, with students becoming more confident and independent travellers while enjoying the adventure of reaching different destinations.

From 26–28 August, our Year 5–6 students headed to Tallebudgera on the Gold Coast for an exciting three-day school camp. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to step outside their usual routines, experience new environments and challenge themselves in a range of new and exciting activities.
Throughout the camp, students participated in activities designed to build confidence, independence, resilience, communication and friendships. These activities included catapult, circus skills, the Big Swing, safe archery, team challenge, canoeing, swimming and beach play.

In the Senior School, preparing for life after school is an important focus. Students visited Conductive Education to sample a potential post-school provider. Students explored the environment, participated in a range of activities and experienced what a structured post-school program could look and feel like. These visits supported students to experience new routines, meet different people and discover more about their own interests and preferences as they prepare for their exciting next chapter.

Our K/L Hospitality students were busy in the kitchen throughout Term 3, whipping up delicious hot chocolates and an assortment of sweet treats. Students practised following recipes, measuring ingredients, safely using kitchen equipment and working alongside their peers to create some very tasty results. These practical sessions were a fantastic way for students to build their confidence and independence in the kitchen- and taste-testing was definitely an important part of the process!
