📞 0410 027 340 (Jo) 🎓 At SEMAS Academy Indooroopilly, we help children aged 3-11 build strong maths skills, focus, and confidence through Japanese Soroban Abacus Maths.

🧠 Our engaging, multisensory program is designed to activate both sides of the brain — enhancing memory, logical thinking, and creativity — creating a fun, enriching learning experience for the child. Founded by Jo, a former medical doctor and mum-of-two, SEMAS Academy Indooroopilly is proud to bring Queensland’s first SEMAS Academy Centre to life in Brisbane. After seeing how the program transformed her own children’s focus, confidence, and love for learning, Jo was inspired to share it with other families.

✨ Sharper maths.

Term 3 begins Saturday, 18 July! 🌟

We’re looking forward to welcoming our students back to SEMAS Academy Indooroopilly for another term of learning and progress.

Through structured Japanese Soroban (abacus) training, children develop strong calculation skills while building important foundations in number sense, concentration, working memory and mental visualisation.

We are still accepting enrolments for Term 3, with limited places available across our programs:

🔸 Mini | Ages 3–5
🔸 Soroban Kids | Ages 5–8
🔸 Mastering Soroban | Ages 8–11

Classes are held in small groups on Saturday mornings in Indooroopilly, with students placed according to their age, readiness and current ability.

✨ Free trials are available for families who would like to learn more and see whether the program is a good fit for their child.

📩 Send us a message to enquire or arrange a free trial.

👆🧮 Soroban finger practice is a deliberate fluency method: patterned calculations performed with precise bead technique.

In this clip, a Year 1 learner in our Soroban Kids program completes the classic sequence 1+2+3 ...+10 = 55 step-by-step on the Japanese soroban.

These short drills strengthen number sense, working memory and attention regulation while building the fine-motor control needed for accurate abacus use. Over time, this fluency forms an important bridge from hands-on calculation to mental visualisation (ANZAN).

We teach Soroban Kids in small groups on Saturday mornings in Indooroopilly. Enquiries are welcome ‒ Message the page for more details! 🌿

Thank you to the families who came along to our launch trial day yesterday 💛
It was such a joy meeting you and seeing the children engage so thoughtfully with the Soroban (Japanese abacus).

✨ For our trial day, we created a welcoming space where children could explore the abacus while parents had the opportunity to view our curriculum and learning approach.

We are now running small-group classes on Saturday mornings during the school term at Brigidine College, Indooroopilly.

If you missed launch day, you're very welcome to book a Saturday free trial — simply message us your child's age and year level, and I will be in touch to confirm a time.

Looking forward to a wonderful Term 1 ahead 🌱

Thank you to local families and schools we met this week! 💛

Curious about the Soroban? It is a Japanese abacus that turns maths into a fun, hands-on skill: kids use fingers → picture it → calculate mentally.

I'm Jo – mum of two in Indooroopilly – and I teach the Japanese Soroban to help kids build focus, memory, and confidence in maths.

Watch this demo by a 5-year-old little learner 🌈
