Another snippet from one of our music and movement sessions at The Village! 🎶

Our children had a wonderful time singing, dancing, and making music alongside their Grandfriends. With shaker eggs in hand and the talented Village ukulele group leading the way, there were plenty of smiles, movement, and shared moments of joy.

Along the way, our Grandfriends shared stories about their own kindergarten days. The children were fascinated to learn that one Grandfriend listened to the radio for distance education, while another rode a horse to school!

These special intergenerational experiences provide opportunities for children to build connections, develop a sense of belonging, and gain insight into how life has changed across generations. Most importantly, they remind us that music, stories, and friendship have the power to bring people together.

We always look forward to our time with our Grandfriends. 💛

Our visits to The Village provide meaningful opportunities for children to connect with older generations and learn from the wisdom and experiences of their Grandfriends.

During this week’s literacy and storytelling session, our Grandfriends shared stories about life in the past, sparking conversations about how communities worked together and how much technology has changed over time.

Through these stories, children explored important values such as kindness, sharing, gratitude, and caring for others. They were particularly interested in learning how people shared food and resources to ensure everyone in the community was looked after.

These intergenerational experiences help foster empathy, respect, and a deeper understanding of the world around us. We are always grateful for the time, stories, and friendship our Grandfriends share with us. 💛
Thank you to our wonderful Grandfriends for another special morning of stories, learning and connection.😊

🚒 This week we welcomed the wonderful team from Annerley Fire Station to kindy!

Visits like these are an important part of our safety program, helping children learn about fire safety and the important role firefighters play in keeping our community safe. The children had the opportunity to watch Firefighter Dean put on all of his protective gear and equipment, learning that even when firefighters look different or a little scary in their full uniform, they are always there to help and keep us safe.

Our kindy children confidently know that 000 is the number to call in an emergency and understand the procedures we follow when evacuating the building.

A huge thank you to Firefighter Paul and the Annerley crew for taking the time to visit and share their knowledge with us. We are so grateful for our local community heroes! ❤️🚒

Earlier this term, we were delighted to welcome Patricia Keeler, COO of Lady Gowrie QLD, to Yeronga Hyde Road Kindergarten. 💚

Patricia spent time exploring our learning environments, community connections and pedagogical initiatives, and was particularly impressed by the thoughtful ways we support children’s hands-on learning experiences.

She even rolled up her sleeves and joined in at our woodwork table using our real tools — a much-loved space proudly refurbished by Men’s Shed Dutton Park in 2025. 🪵🔨

We are incredibly proud to be part of the Lady Gowrie QLD community and look forward to continuing to share and celebrate innovative, child-led practices within the wider early childhood sector.

Building connections across generations 💛

Our intergenerational visits to The Village are all about creating meaningful relationships between our kindy children and older members of the community through shared experiences such as gardening, music, art, singing and storytelling. In this special moment, the children are moving to “Stomp” by Aunty Sharron mirii Bell — an interactive song that encourages children to dance, connect with Country and show respect for Mother Earth through movement and music 🎶🌿

Research has shown that these programs can help children build empathy, confidence, communication skills and a positive understanding of ageing, while also bringing joy, friendship and connection to older generations.

At Hyde Road Kindy, we love providing opportunities for our children to engage with the wider community in purposeful and caring ways. Watching these beautiful friendships grow has already been incredibly special for everyone involved ✨
