We could not have asked for a more lovely group of candidates last week.

Let's start with Wayne Schefe. Within a minute of meeting Wayne, you can understand why he has had such an illustrious career on the rigs. Currently working with Senex as a Company Representative on a Ventia Rig, Wayne speaks so highly of the team he works alongside.

When he talks about the crew on the Ventia Rig, there is a genuine twinkle of pride, a team that works hard and strives to run a high-performing, efficient and safe operation.

It's awesome having people like Wayne in our face-to-face courses alongside the younger guys coming through. The depth of experience, combined with someone who is willing to share it, helps settle nerves, starts great conversations and builds confidence in the room. Thanks for your support this week, Wayne. It was a pleasure having you with us.

Then there is Torey Kirby from Morpheus, sitting his Well Control for the first time. Torey is the quiet achiever, taking it all in and computing at a high frequency! He worked incredibly hard this week and did everything that was asked of him. Torey, you earned this certificate. We are genuinely delighted to see you take this next step in your career. Morpheus clearly knows how to recruit talent and that is a skill I admire.

And then there's David Crow of Savanna Rig 152. David is the quintessential Australian country boy. The kind of bloke who would give you the shirt off his back. He's hardworking, humble and just an all-round good human. I can imagine he's very good at what he does and I have no doubt he'll make a fantastic Driller too. Hopefully he will become a coffee drinker the next time we see him!

Finally, a big thank you to Liam Berwick from Silver City and Gareth Murray from High Arctic, who joined Scott Andrews virtually this week.

Last week we had the pleasure of training seasoned hand Peter LePage and first-time candidate Jack Diesing.

Peter brought a calm, confident energy to the course which naturally enriched the learning environment for everyone involved. It came as no surprise to us when he aced 🌟 his exams and achieved Distinction status, averaging 90% or above across all three assessments.

Jack, meanwhile, had the weight of the rig on his shoulders. Passing this course meant a promotion to Assistant Driller, along with the positive flow-on effect that comes with progression for the wider crew. He felt the pressure, but rose to the occasion and performed under it, something we were absolutely thrilled to witness.

For us, it never stops being a special moment watching a student’s face light 💡 up when we tell them they’ve passed. We know how challenging these courses are, and passing is a huge milestone in itself. Pair that with a promotion, and that’s the cherry 🍒 on top.

Peter and Jack were outstanding 👨‍🎓 students, and we wish them every success in their careers moving forward.

Here’s to another big week of well control training. This week we shift gears into Supervisor level, including one Subsea candidate, always a different pace and dynamic. Looking forward to sharing more stories soon.

There’s a saying in our industry — you’re only as good as your last well.

In well control training, we see it the same way: you’re only as good as the outcomes your students achieve.

This week, we had three candidates come through with Scott Andrews as trainer and assessor and we’re proud to say all three passed.

For some, this was their first time stepping into well control. For others, it was about coming back, putting in the work, and getting the result.

Lachlan Paul, Ben Smith and Blake Smith, a brilliant cohort. A great mix of experience, attitude and willingness to learn.

That combination is what makes the difference.

Strong delivery.
Engaged students.
Real outcomes.

A 100% pass rate this week and well deserved.

Looking forward to seeing Scott take that same energy into the virtual courses in June.

This week we’ve had Scott Andrews teaching well control and it’s reaffirmed exactly what I knew he would bring as an instructor.

That ingredient that’s so hard to define, but impossible to miss when it’s there.

People often think it’s experience. And yes, experience has its place.

But I’ve seen highly experienced people struggle to connect in a classroom. And I’ve also seen instructors with little or no rig experience become some of the most sought-after in the industry.

The difference?

Genuine care.

Care about whether people are actually understanding, not just getting through the content.
Care about reading the room, adapting, and knowing when to change approach.
Care about the outcome, not just the delivery.

That’s what turns training into something that sticks.

And with Scott, we’ve hit the trifecta: 15+ years O&G experience, a background in education, and a genuine care and passion to see people learn and perform.

Looking forward to seeing him bring that same energy and standard into the virtual training space over the coming months.

We had the pleasure of hosting another first-time Level 3 candidate this week, Reilly.

Currently working derricks on Morpheus Rig 37 in support of Shell QGC operations, it’s clear they’ve got an exceptional recruit on their hands.

The hours put in this week were significant, and the results speak for themselves. Reilly leaves our office with his IWCF certification thoroughly earned.

There’s a narrative that young people today lack work ethic. In our experience, that narrative doesn’t hold and Reilly is a perfect example of why.

First through the door before 7:30am each day, and consistently the last to leave. Focused, disciplined, and committed to the process.

What stood out just as much was his grounded nature, a country upbringing reflected in a humble, no-fuss attitude and strong family values.

The future of the industry is in capable hands with individuals like Reilly coming through the ranks.

Congratulations, Reilly. We’re genuinely excited to see where this journey takes you over the next few years.

Another first-time Level 3. Another standout result.

This week, we had the pleasure of training Max through IWCF Well Control and he’s absolutely delivered. Currently working on Savanna Rig 407 with QGC/Shell as a Motorman, this result makes the achievement even more impressive.

Max is the kind of candidate every trainer hopes for: committed, switched on, and willing to do whatever it takes to get it right. With Damir’s calm, steady guidance, he’s come out on top this morning.

We love working with first-time Level 3s. Because it’s not just about passing it’s about truly understanding the risks of well control and the responsibility that comes with it.

That’s why we focus on creating an environment where candidates don’t just learn the content — they build the confidence to make the right call when it matters most, on the rig.

Max has a big future ahead of him in this industry — no doubt about it. We’re proud to have played a small part in the journey.

If you’re putting your team through Level 3, the standard of training matters.

You know how there are people in the industry you naturally gravitate toward, the ones who are not only high performers, but genuinely good people? That was certainly the case this week hosting Brett Griffiths and Barath Ashokkumar from Bridgeport.

Brett is a bit of a unicorn 🦄 in our industry. Trade-qualified as a mechanic, he’s worked his way from Leasehand all the way through to Rig Manager, and today is a Well Operations Superintendent at Bridgeport. That kind of experience, across both the tools and leadership is rare.

We know that Well Control week can be stressful, and many students 🧑‍🎓 prefer to return to the same place for their training. That familiarity can help settle the nerves. So we were genuinely humbled when Brett said he’d like to come and give WellEngIQ a go and that he would be bringing along his colleague Barath.

It’s been a real pleasure hosting them this week and a great reminder of the strong culture at Bridgeport.

They’ve also done exceptionally well, with Brett currently sitting at the top of the WellEngIQ leaderboard 📋 and Barath breathing down his neck. A fantastic result from both of them.

We love it when a plan comes together. 👏

Four students. Four passes.

Not that we’re bragging because the credit belongs entirely to them.

When you complete your pre-course study, show up with intent to work hard, engage fully during the week, and back it up with homework each night, you give yourself the best possible chance of success. That’s exactly what our students did this week.

🔹 Sean Bailey from Wild Desert – a first-time Level 3 candidate who has done himself proud. Your very first well control course and you came out on top. We are so happy for you, mate, here’s to stepping up in your career.

🔹 Alex Kelly from Savanna Energy Australia, a first-time Level 4 candidate who has been quietly putting in the work. We were thrilled to see you take the win today. Congratulations, Alex.

🔹 Benjamin Morriss, working for Savanna Energy Australia in the Cooper Basin – a seasoned professional with a wealth of knowledge. What struck me about Ben was that he came straight from a weekend of 12-hour days on the farm into a full week of well control. If that doesn’t demonstrate work ethic, I don’t know what does.

🔹 And finally, a familiar face in Scott Aspinall, who previously worked with Damir for Origin Energy in the NT’s Beetaloo Basin on Kyalla 117 a few moons ago. Scott brought a depth of knowledge and experience into the classroom, which elevated discussions for everyone. Needless to say, he nailed his well control exams and will be heading back offshore to Malaysia in a couple of weeks to support Noble Corporation operations.
