Each year on the 4th August Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are celebrated. This remains an important day for the children and as part of Australia’s reconciliation journey.

This year's theme is Living Our Truth, celebrating the journeys Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children take as they grow, guided by culture, community and connection to Country. Together, we can nurture their voices and dreams and support a future where every child walks
strong in their identity.

NAIDOC WEEK 5-12th July

This year marks a significant milestone as we celebrate 50 Years of Deadly.

For five decades, NAIDOC Week has amplified the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, celebrating culture, honouring resilience, sharing truth, and recognising the enduring strength of communities across Australia.

More than a week of celebration, NAIDOC is a platform for connection, reflection, pride, and cultural continuity. It honours the Elders, leaders, artists, advocates, and communities who have shaped this movement and continue to inspire future generations.

The official NAIDOC Week 2026 poster, Paralpi, was created by proud Yankunytjatjara artist and musician Zaachariaha Fielding. Rich in colour and symbolism, the artwork reflects movement, continuity, cultural strength, and the powerful legacy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples over the past 50 years and beyond.

Coming of the Light Festival - 1st July

Today we recognise and celebrate the Coming of the Light Festival, an important cultural and spiritual event for the peoples of the Torres Strait Islands.
Observed annually on 1 July, the festival commemorates the arrival of missionaries to the Torres Strait in 1871. The people of the Torres Strait Islands adopted Christian rituals and ceremonies while continuing to uphold their deep connection to land, sea, and sky, maintaining their traditional customs and cultural identity known as Ailan Kastom.

Each year on 1 July, The Coming of the Light or Keriba Lagaw Buiya in traditional language, is celebrated through community gatherings, performances, storytelling, song, dance, and reflection. It is a day that honours faith, culture, resilience, and the enduring traditions of Torres Strait Islander peoples.
At Raindrops of Diversity, we value opportunities to learn about and celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Through respectful learning experiences, we can help children develop understanding, appreciation, and connection to the diverse cultures that shape our nation.

Today, we encourage you to take a moment to learn more about Torres Strait Islander cultures and celebrate the strength of traditions that continue to be shared across generations.

National Sorry Day, held on 26 May each year, acknowledges and recognises members of the Stolen Generations. It is an important day of reflection and healing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, and an important part of healing for the nation.
The Native Hibiscus Flower, the symbol of National Sorry Day, represents hope and healing — reminding us of the importance of truth-telling, reflection, and walking together in understanding and respect.

For educators, this day provides an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations about our shared history in age-appropriate and respectful ways, helping children build empathy, understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The 2026 theme, Bee Together for People and the Planet – A Partnership That Sustains Us All, celebrates the enduring relationship between humans and pollinators, highlighting how traditional knowledge and modern innovation can work together to protect bee health and create a more sustainable future.
This is a wonderful opportunity to help children explore the interconnectedness of nature and develop an appreciation for the tiny creatures that help our world thrive.
