It's been 18 months, nearly 19 months, since Simone left us and it doesn't get any easier. We miss you S π€
ICYMI Simone died tragically from methanol poisoning in November 2024 while on holiday with two friends in Vang Vieng in Laos. Simone and her friends drunk alcohol provided by their hostel - they had no idea it was tainted with methanol. Even small amounts of methanol - 30 ml, one shot - can be lethal. All three became severely ill and were hospitalised. Sadly, Simone never recovered and died with brain damage.
Please support our campaign by signing our Change.org petition (link in bio) to help us raise awareness of the risks of methanol poisoning by:
βοΈ Introducing airport safety reforms including signage, leaflets and information points.
π Adding warnings in airline in-flight magazines
π§βπ« Updating the school curriculum to educate young people before they start drinking and travelling
Thanks for your support! π

The Simone White Methanol Awareness Campaign team attended the Methanol Awareness Partners Roundtable at Portcullis House last month - another positive step forward to progressing wider awareness of the risks of methanol poisoning in the UK. π
Together, the and representatives from travel partners including Airlines UK, AirportsUK , , (Airports Group) and , agreed to consider how we can introduce more touchpoints in a travellerβs journey to help educate travellers on the risks of drinking alcohol abroad and symptoms of methanol poisoning. π‘
We look forward to supporting the methanol awareness campaign launched by the FCDO this summer to ensure that travellers know how to enjoy their holidays safely and that no more families and friends lose a loved one to methanol poisoning. π€
Thank you MP and MP and their teams for making this meeting happen! π

They drank the same alcohol.
One lost her life.
One was left asking why she survived.
One woke up thinking it was a hangover.
One lost his sight forever.
It was methanol poisoning.
This episode of Insight shares the heartbreaking reality of what happened after a group of young travellers unknowingly consumed methanol tainted drinks in Laos.
Despite drinking the same amount, Simone died and Bethany survived.
The episode also follows Kipp and Calum, who unknowingly consumed the same contaminated alcohol. Kipp believed he was experiencing a bad hangover. Calum initially felt relatively normal before suddenly beginning to lose his vision. Today, he is permanently blind.
Their stories are different, but they are connected by one frightening reality. None of them knew they had consumed methanol, and the early symptoms seemed easy to dismiss.
This is why awareness matters.

A big thank you to SBS to inviting us on the programme to spread awareness about methanol poisoning ππ»
When Bethany was travelling around Southeast Asia with her best friend Simone White in November 2024, she never expected the trip would end in tragedy.
Simone, along with Australian teenagers Bianca Jones and Holly Bowles, was one of six people who died in Laos in November 2024 from methanol poisoning.
Bethany said she struggled to process how differently her and Simone's bodies reacted to the poisoning.
"It didn't really make sense, and it still doesn't make sense," Bethany said.
For those left with guilt, trauma and grief, survival can be something some still struggle to make sense of. To read the full story, tap here: https://bit.ly/3RGkT6Q
And to explore more about those who have survived life-threatening situations and the aftermath, watch Insight episode Lucky Escapes? Tuesday 26 May 8.30pm on SBS or SBS On Demand.

Most people have never even heard of methanol poisoning.
That is part of the problem.
In 2023, a UK Coroner warned about the growing risk and said action should be taken to prevent future deaths.
One year later, six tourists died in Laos after suspected methanol poisoning.
One of them was my best friend, Simone.

You will not taste it.
You might not feel it straight away.
Methanol poisoning is more common than people think.
Just 15ml can cause blindness.
30ml can be fatal.
The most dangerous part?
Symptoms can take 12β48 hours to appear, which means many people do not realise what is happening until it is too late.
This is not rare.
And it is not always obvious.
Save this. Share it. It could save a life.
What feels like a hangover could actually be methanol poisoning.
Methanol poisoning can occur when alcohol is illegally produced, improperly distilled, or contaminated with methanol to cut costs. It is colourless and extremely difficult to detect by taste or smell.
Symptoms may begin like a hangover but can quickly become life-threatening, including vision loss, organ failure, coma, and death.
Simone and the others had no way of knowing their drinks were unsafe.
We are sharing this so more people understand the risks and so no other families have to experience this loss.
