Margaret shares the warning signs of methanol poisoning - and why knowing them could save a life.

Kirsty’s mum, Margaret, wants young people travelling abroad to understand the symptoms and know when something isn’t right.

Look out for:
🍸 Feeling dizzier than usual and feels worse over time
🍸 Visual disturbances or problems with your eyesight
🍸 Breathlessness
🍸 Stomach pain and nausea
🍸 Confusion or changes in mental state

Look out for your friends, if a friend seems drunker than you’d expect, get them to a hospital as quickly as you can.

Knowing the signs and acting quickly can save lives.

If you’re heading abroad, or know someone who is, please share this advice with them.

Help us spread the word, know the signs and look out for each other.

Calum lost his sight when he was poisoned with methanol in Laos.

He also experienced a blinding kaleidoscope light, a lack of physical coordination and trouble breathing.

Calum continues to tell his story in hopes that it means others won’t go through what he has gone through. Like so many, he hadn’t heard of the dangers of methanol poisoning.

This is why awareness is so important.

Awareness can save lives.

Methanol poisoning isn’t talked about enough.

The reality is that many people don’t know it exists until it’s too late.

That’s why raising awareness, educating others, and sharing accurate information is so important.

The conversation shouldn’t start after a tragedy. It should start before one happens.

Someone you know is probably travelling this year. If this post encourages even one person to learn the signs and symptoms of methanol poisoning, understand what to look out for, and explore our account to become more informed, it’s already made a difference.

MethaKnow needs your help! 🫵

The victims of methanol poisoning and their family and friends have together formed a global initiative* called MethaKnow dedicated to preventing methanol poisoning through education, awareness, and advocacy. We also support victims, survivors and family and friends with peer support and information that they need.

*Our charity application is pending.

How can you help?
1️⃣ Donate to our GoFundMe to help us cover our charity expenses.
2️⃣ Share this post and our page with your family and friends who are going travelling soon!

We are doing this in memory of Simone, Holly, Bianca, Freja, Anne-Sophie, Kirsty and every person who has lost their life to methanol poisoning, and for every traveller and family who deserves to be safe from this preventable tragedy.

Even if you can’t donate today, please remember to avoid drinking spirits abroad to stay safe on your travels.

☀️ Travelling this summer? Take 30 seconds to read this.

Many people heading to Southeast Asia, South America and beyond have never heard of methanol poisoning.

From this September, it’s being taught in schools across England and Wales, but for many travellers that knowledge comes too late.

Following the tragic deaths of Simone White and five other travellers in Laos after drinking methanol/contaminated alcohol, awareness has never been more important.

✔️ Stick to sealed canned drinks where possible.

✔️ Avoid spirits unless you’re confident they’re genuine or take duty-free if you plan to drink them.

✔️ Check the Foreign Office guidance and watch our symptoms reel.

If this helps even one person stay safe, it’s worth sharing!

Tag your travel buddy, send this to anyone travelling this summer, and comment “SAFE” once you’ve shared it so we know the message is spreading 🌍

We're worried we'll never find out who is responsible for Simone's death - and no one will be brought to justice. We're worried that we have to wait 15 more years to gain closure.

Laos authorities announced at a press conference on Friday that:
1️⃣ They can't determine the cause of death of Simone and the other 5 travellers who died of methanol poisoning in Vang Vieng, Laos.
2️⃣ The distillery owner is facing charges for the sale of food products, but not the 6 deaths. No other charges against any other people have been announced.

After 20 months of waiting, this isn't good enough.
