Jokes aside, when sparring at Bai Rui we always aim for "your level +1": just enough intensity to push you past your comfort zone and teach you how to learn and improve, never enough to overwhelm or hurt you. Respect and challenge aren't opposites - the best training partners give you both at once.

Tae Kwon Do can be a creative and playful. You experiment, you make new friends, you laugh, you try things that probably shouldn't work but sometimes do. That's where the love of it lives. But your instructor? They're there to push you past your comfort zone. The discomfort isn't the enemy; it's the lesson. It's even better when you get to return a bit of that discomfort 🥋😇

In all seriousness though, sparring is one of the best tools you have as a martial artist. It teaches you adaptability, timing and how to problem-solve in real time.
Every round is a lesson and the best thing you can do is embrace the challenge in front of you. At the end of the day, sparring is just a game!

In today's installment of the Paddington sparring chronicles, we have some wholesome moments with adults coaching kids as they rotate through everyone in the class. Then there's Mr J...

Every time you spar Mr J it's a mix of great spirit and a bunch of random new things that he's trying. The classroom is the place to be trying new things, as you don't want to do it on the mats or on the street. This is not scripted, it's just wholesomeness followed by Mr J doing his thing with a full send superman punch on the buzzer. Mr Mornament was kind enough not to flatten him for his trouble, as we want our students to try new thing and not pay too high a price for it.

Elizabeth also had a go at Dad. A little less spirit but a little more thought. I'm sure she'll get me one day as well.

Some father daughter sparring action. It's not everyday you get the chance to try and hit your dad in the face and for that to be totally fine. One day Vivienne, not yet though.

It's important that kids get the chance to train with adults. We don't just put the kids in the corner, we teach them just the same as anyone else.

First up we have the old man boxing championships. This is very serious business, and is as yet undecided as to who the champion between Mr Mornament and Mr Spencer is. This battle is likely to continue for another decade...

We don't just have kids at Paddington. We have an mix of adults who train seriously, down to kids who we're getting to be more serious about their training as time goes on.
