Camp Hill Outside Hours School is a center whose focus is on play based learning using natural, stimulating resources. Hello Families,

As most of you may be aware we have been lucky enough to have Griffith OT students Tia, Layla and Jasmin conducting a project to improve the children's capabilities and independence at OSHC. After some deep observation over 8 weeks they have put together some resources to assist parents, families and OSHC leaders with information that can help us support the children in our care develop independence and resilience while at OSHC.

Please see some informative brochures that Jasmin, Layla and Tia have put together at the OSHC front desk. The brochures are Camp Hill OSHC specific, and aimed to help us all establish some achievable goals for our preppies and young children that attend OSHC. Please feel free to take a Brochure home. On top of this you will notice some posters that offer similar tips and tricks around ways to support children in their growth and development at OSHC

OSHC has always been a great place for children to develop resilience and independence, and we believe these resources will aid to that process, ensuring that your children continue to develop capability and self confidence around their daily tasks.

The girls will be with us for another 2 weeks. Please reach out to them as you see them if you have any questions around their project.

Wow. What a day!

Who knew Commonwealth Games day could come to such an emotional end, with comrades shaking hands, tears of joy, and pride galore.

We started off the day with Gymnastics, Golf, Relays, Dodgeball, Basketball, and Badminton. The kids played for points and glory, and a trophy, of course.

We finished the day with a huge soccer tournament (sold out crowd!) which saw completely mixed teams of varying ages cheering each other on and putting in their all. With a final score of 4-2 they really left it all on the field. Not to mention, one of our own OSHC kids organised the whole tournament from start to finish! He took it upon himself to organise teams, communicate with players, set up the field, make the cards and commentate the game. We are so proud of the kids we have here and their incredible initiative and passion.

Congrats to not only our winners of the day, but to everyone who participated! Best day ever!

Yesterday we had an OSHC classic, Wheels Day, but with a twist! Last Term one of our dedicated OSHC students pitched an idea for a Wheels and Fidgets Day (fidgets for those who don’t favour wheels) she put so much effort into the planning, proposal and the day itself. The kids LOVED the races!

We absolutely love when kids come to us with ideas for activities or even whole Vacation Care Days, it’s a lot of effort to plan, but we find that the kids take a lot of pride in what they’ve achieved. Such a fun day! 🚲

Throwback to Monday! We kicked off Vacation Care with a Village Day Incursion by TenggrenPlay!

The kids all started the day with 15 OSHC dollars, which they could use to invest in business, purchase health care from the nurse, or spend it all at the General Store and Arcade. Throughout the day, the police were cleaning up the streets of OSHC and the lawyer and judge helped to settle disputes.

There were adoptions, fruitful business ventures, and a heated lawsuit against the Cafe for price gouging, which resulted in the cafe slashing prices to help with greater affordability! The kids had such a fun day, and their entrepreneurial spirits and hard work paid off to make a sustainable OSHC village. 🫶🏻

You know it was a great excursion when you have all 97 children screaming Laserforce at the top of their lungs! With 2 hours of arcade and laser tag games, it’s obvious to know why the day was so popular. Of course the staff got involved in the games. With Tommy the oshc playworkers showing his misspent years, smashing all the scores across the board! Great start to the holidays.

The things you find in the play space. This group of children had gathered together a bunch of tyres to make a climbing frame on the back of one of our structures. The children explained that it was not only a tyre frame to climb to the top but also they purposefully left one of the sides without tyres to allow for them to slide down.

Not only this, they also explained that the tyres were used as beds to curl into.

Unfortunately the mesh cloth of the base is not meant to carry too much weight and after discussing options between playworkers and the children, we decided that we would temporarily pause the play while we reinforced the mesh. Allowing the children to be engaged and participate in the process, having a direct impact on their world.

We know as playworkers that our ultimate aim in our spaces is to offer as many play affordances as possible. What does this look like practically? Well instead of saying no we look to problem solve solutions to ensure the space is relative and pertinent to the children who use the space at the time and what their play drives are. This takes engaged playworkers in the space who can observe and reflect in the moment to extend children’s play. Reflecting constantly on our biases and breaking down adult agendas where possible.

A very productive and conversational staff meeting yesterday! We covered off some important topics to start; including the upcoming Vacation Care program and routine reminders, Inclusion support, the new RCS and some minor changes to our BSC drop off routine.

To end the meeting, we had a round table group reflection around the Spring Camp PD over the weekend. Staff reflected on the key take aways for them, allowing us to look at how the documentary and Lieses follow up PD impacted us as not only as playworkers but how this impacts our work at the service.

The conversation perfectly led to the idea around allowing children more autonomy and responsibility in the space, aligning very nicely to the current project our visiting Griffith students are doing.

The OT students debriefed the staff on the survey results from their recent survey to families and staff, highlighting that both stakeholders saw value in the importance of autonomy and responsibility for children and both acknowledging that more practical guidance would be highly beneficial.

We are all excited to see how we can better support parents, children and staff in this. Keep an eye out!

Our staff are now tasked for the next week to complete the following weekly task:

Weekly Task: Due 16th of Sep

Following on from the weekend we are focusing on the ‘let them grow’ project that was initiated throughout the documentary. Your task is to, through conversation with a child, ask them something that they think they are ready or responsible enough to do, but we do not let them do at the service (I’m also happy for you to gather this information without directly asking the question but through observation etc..). If you do get information from a specific child please let us know who the child is, their age and any other relevant info.

Alternately you could provide a specific idea that you may have reflected on in relation to the responsibilities you took on from your own childhood (for some of us those reflections can be specifically about the things you used to be allowed to do at OSHC) that we might not have process around or allow currently.

On top of this, following our discussion at the staff meeting, please provide any other reflections about how we can create an environment that encourages children to take on more responsibility within the space. This could be elements such as skill building, cleaning up after themselves etc…

From this task I’m sure we will find some things to action, while other observations or reflections will lead to great critical reflection and discussion. It is fairly broad in how we approach this weekly task. The overall themes are responsibility and how we can allow it at OSHC.
