Last week, Teho (CIAF Artistic Director) and India (CIAF Exhibition Manager) visited inaugural CIAF CATAPULT recipient and proud Badu Island artist Matilda Nona during her residency at NorthSite Contemporary Arts (@northsite_contemporaryarts) in Gimuy/Cairns. Guided by collaborative printmaker Dian Darmansjah, Matilda fused traditional lino-printing techniques with her groundbreaking ink-making process. This process involves collecting mangrove bark, orchids, ochres from her Torres Strait homelands, then cooking, burning and fermenting these materials to create organic inks that bring her cultural narratives to life on paper. The two-week residency provided a fertile ground for artistic exploration, culminating in a compelling new body of work. Aptly named, the CATAPULT program is an annual accelerator and showcase program for Queensland’s First Nations artists. The program comprises two streams: professional development, of which Matilda Nona is the inaugural recipient, and a showcase program for independent artists to feature work in CIAF’s Art Fair Showcase. We look forward to celebrating Matilda's work at NorthSite Contemporary Arts in April and at CIAF 2025 (10-13 July), where a more extensive collection will be showcased as part of the 'Pay Attention!' themed Art Fair Showcase at the Tanks Arts Centre.
