What keeps a transformer healthy and running safely? Turns out, it all starts with the oil. 💡🔧

This week, the IEEE QUT Student Branch had the pleasure of attending a highly insightful session led by Philippe Reboul, GAICD, Managing Director at Molekulis Pty Ltd, on the fascinating topic of transformer oils, often referred to as the "blood of the transformer" 🩸⚡

📍 Philippe shared his deep knowledge on why oil remains one of the most effective insulating and cooling mediums in transformers more than 130 years after its invention.

📍 We explored how oil characteristics impact transformer longevity, and the role of modern alternatives and their environmental footprint 🌱

📍 He also touched on the importance of international and Australian standards, and how DGA (Dissolved Gas Analysis) helps assess not just the oil’s condition, but the health of the entire transformer 🔍

Transformer oil has been a key player in electrical systems for over 130 years, offering both insulation and cooling. Philippe will explore its critical electrical, physical, and chemical properties, the difference between intrinsic and non-intrinsic characteristics, and how these impact asset longevity.

Expect insights into:

🔹 Hidden complexities of transformer oil
🔹 Fluid types and environmental considerations (including LCA)
🔹 International and Australian standards
🔹 DGA (Dissolved Gas Analysis) as a diagnostic tool for transformers

About the Presenter:

Philippe Reboul brings over a decade of experience with transformer oil in Australia and an impressive international background in the energy sector across Europe, Japan, and Australia. He is also a key contributor to Standards Australia’s EL-008 committee and a passionate supporter of transformer innovation and education.
