🌱🔬🦋Living by the Bay with Morningside State School Prep! 🐚🔍🦀

The enthusiastic Prep students from Morningside State School stepped into the role of Super Scientists during their recent Living by the Bay adventure.

Using their senses to observe, explore and investigate, students discovered the amazing natural world of Quandamooka from Manly foreshore to Winnam Pond and gardens at the Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre.

Through hands-on investigations, the Prep students looked closely at the external features of animals and learned how these special adaptations help living things grow, survive and thrive in their habitats.

From spotting creatures hidden amongst the mangroves and intertidal zone to examining the colours, shapes and coverings of different garden minibeasts, our young scientists were busy making observations, asking questions and sharing their discoveries.

What a fantastic day of curiosity, exploration and connection with nature. We loved seeing these budding scientists engage with the environment and deepen their understanding of the living world around them. 🌱🪲💚🌊🦀

Chapel Hill State School Year 6 students launched into the Overboard and Underwater program this week to investigate the marine environment.

The students measured the bay’s physical conditions, while closer examination revealed brittle stars and other fascinating marine creatures living on the seafloor, alongside an unwelcome discovery — fragments of microplastic scattered throughout the habitat.

It was wonderful to hear the students’ ideas for tackling the problem and brainstorming new ways to prevent plastic from reaching the water.

What can be discovered below the surface of Quandamooka waters?

That’s precisely what Year 7 students from Stuartholme School investigated during the Water in Our World Program this week.

Using an Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (UROV) to survey vital seagrass habitats, our citizen scientists collected valuable data to assess the seafloor and better understand the health of the bay.

Following the flow of water, students also investigated the local catchment and explored management strategies presented by a Port of Brisbane environment expert to help improve water quality across Moreton Bay.

What a privilege to showcase a selection of Moreton Bay EEC’s rich learning experiences with the More Than School Professional Teacher Group from Taiwan.

These incredibly passionate teachers were hands on across the day, here to learn more about science teaching in Australia. What a fabulous experience to share in practice and pedagogy with an international group.

Greenslopes State School Year 5 students boarded Inspiration and became historians for the day, setting off on a journey to St Helena Island.
Through the St Helena Stories Program, students uncovered the island’s prison history (1867–1932) and learned about different perspectives of social groups and their lived experiences.

A huge congratulations to our adventurous Year 5 historians for their enthusiasm and questions. Also, thanks to the Greenslopes State School staff for supporting such a meaningful day of learning.

This week, the Year 2 students from St Stephen's School, Algester attended our Connect with Heritage program at Newstead House, to imagine what life was like at the historical residence in the 1800s.

During their visit, the History Detectives participated in a variety of hands-on activities and investigated a range of historical artefacts - from everyday objects to treasured items from another era. Each artefact provided a window into the lives, technologies and traditions of the past, telling stories about the people who used them; allowing students to make comparisons between life in the past and today, revealing how some things change while others remain the same over the course of time.

We congratulate our young historians from St Stephen's School for their enthusiasm, curiosity, insightful questions and thoughtful discoveries throughout the day!
