Our Education and Engagement consultant Fiona had the pleasure of facilitating Introduction to Neuroscience with the team at Centre for Women.
A particular highlight was the brain building activity that involved teams using various materials to construct a physical representation of the brain. This hands-on exercise helped practitioners understand the powerful role experiences play in early brain development.
Would the foundation built in the early years of brain development withstand the stressors experienced over the next 3 years or would it collapse? Through this activity practitioners reflected on: what shapes brain development; how important are early social supports; Can you have a brain that withstands life stresses later in life after experiencing toxic stress in early life?
Participant feedback from the session:
"Great content, great presenter!"
"It was a good introduction to explore foundations. Fiona has a clear and genuine passion and interest in the subject matter that came across in her presenting. I appreciate that she knew the subject matter well and was able to speak to the points with relevant examples"
"Fiona was a wonderful facilitator. Content was interesting and engaging. Activities were fun and well spaced out."

The team at Lady Gowrie Townsville recently participated in our ‘Children’s Learning Environments, Spaces, Places and Non-Places’ professional development session, exploring Pathways to Resilience concepts of the Childhood Commons© and Ecoregulation© (Harris, 2022) and how pedagogical decisions about learning environments can support children’s embodied curiosity, social attunement and felt sense of safety. Together participants explored how co-designing environments with children, educators can support their learning, play and wellbeing.
Participant feedback from the session:
"As a result of attending this workshop, I can have confidence in how I have supported children's growth and learning, and I can try other approaches."
"I could listen all day and loved everything, I learnt a lot from the training."
"I feel as though I understand more about the way children’s brains work and it helps me to make meaning of the reasons that children act the way they do."

The Team at Little School Highland Park recently participated in our ‘Reframing Challenging Behaviour’ professional development session, exploring how curiosity and connection can help us better understand the messages behind children’s behaviour. Together, educators reflected on how behaviour is often a child’s way of communicating unmet needs, feelings, or stress.
Some key reflections from the session included:
• Behaviour is communication. When we respond with curiosity rather than reaction, we can better support children’s learning and development.
• Children’s brains are still developing, and they rely on safe, connected adults to help co-regulate emotions.
• Patterned, repetitive and rhythmic experiences, along with sensory-rich environments, help children feel calm, safe and ready to learn.
Participant feedback:
“I can see myself building stronger relationships with children as I apply the knowledge and learnings I had today.”
“I will be including more breathing activities in our day and thinking more carefully about my choice of words.”
