St Finbarr's Primary School Ashgrove

St Finbarr's Primary School Ashgrove St Finbarr’s Catholic Primary School welcomes students from Prep to Year 6. A St Finbarr’s education promises to be rich and rewarding.

Why St Finbarr’s

A connected, Catholic school, St Finbarr’s provides each child a broad and inclusive curriculum underpinned by the foundations of literacy and numeracy. With opportunities for each child’s diverse range of interests and abilities, students grow into a communicative, curious and creative young person, instilled with a true love of life-long learning. A Connected Community

One of our many blessings is the unique partnership between home and school. Parents and their children become proud community members, where energy and enthusiasm is led by our dedicated teachers. Through active involvement in the life of the school, your son or daughter will appreciate and understand by example, the value of community. St Finbarr’s is a school where respectful relationships are built between teachers and students, and students and their friends.

👣 Walking in the Footsteps of St Finbarr 👣

To celebrate the Feast Day of our patron saint, the St Finbarr’s community gathered for a special liturgy, complete with a surprise visit from St Finbarr himself, who reminded us of our call to shine our light for others through faith, love and service.

We also celebrated the achievements of our students during our Term Awards, with peers enthusiastically applauding one another's successes. It was a wonderful reflection of the encouragement, respect and community spirit that make St Finbarr’s such a special place.

Students embarked on a pilgrimage around the school, following cryptic clues and completing challenges that revealed key moments from the life of St Finbarr. As they journeyed from station to station, they uncovered fascinating insights into our patron saint before returning to the classroom to compete against one another in a fast-paced St Finbarr quiz.

Perhaps the most rewarding part of the day was hearing students share comments such as, “Thank you for the liturgy, I really liked it,” “It was great having St Finbarr here,” and “I knew some things about St Finbarr, but I learnt something new today!”

Hearing these reflections reminds us how important it is to create opportunities for students to encounter the story of St Finbarr in meaningful and engaging ways.

Through shared experiences of prayer, learning and celebration, students continue to build a deeper appreciation of the faith, values and legacy that inspire our school community today. 💚

🌱💡 What an incredible day participating in the Brisbane STEM MAD Showcase! 💡🌱

We are SO proud of our STEM MAD teams who showcased their outstanding projects today. Throughout the year, our students have worked alongside our friends from Our Lady Of The Sacred Heart School, Thursday Island & Hammond Island, combining innovation, creativity and a deep commitment to addressing real-world challenges facing Torres Strait communities.

These are the fabulous projects they designed.

🐟 Wapi Rescue is a smart buoy system designed to combat illegal fishing and overfishing in the Zendath Kes. Powered by solar energy, the system uses cameras, GPS, wireless communication and artificial intelligence to identify vessels and compare them against a database of registered boats.

🐸 TSI Pest Control addresses the growing threat of cane toads across the Zendath Kes Islands. Developed in consultation with experts from the Torres Strait Regional Authority, this innovative two-part trapping system targets both adult cane toads and tadpoles, helping to protect native wildlife and support environmental conservation.

🌊 Seagrass Guards focuses on protecting and restoring seagrass meadows, a vital food source for dugongs. Guided by the knowledge of Torres Strait Islander Elders, Rangers and community experts, the project combines smart sensors, rotational grazing technology and seagrass seed dispersal systems to monitor and regenerate seagrass habitats.

❤️ Heart for Heart was created to raise awareness of Rheumatic Heart Disease and support better health outcomes in Torres Strait communities. The prototype device includes a pulse reader, medication storage, a daily health checklist and an emergency help button, helping users monitor their health and access support when needed.

A huge congratulations to our Wapi Rescue and Seagrass Guards teams for being named People's Choice Award winners today. What a wonderful recognition of your hard work, innovation and dedication.

And finally, a HUGE congratulations to Karen Siranovic, who was recognised as BCE's STEM Teacher of the Year. This honour is so incredibly well deserved. Karen's passion, creativity and commitment to authentic learning opportunities inspire students every day, and we absolutely loved seeing our learners celebrate her achievement with such enthusiasm and joy.

We are so proud of this partnership and these young people who are using their talents to make a difference in the world. 💚💙

📚🎻 A Symphony of Stories 🎻📚

Our Book Week Parade brought favourite book characters to life as students and staff celebrated this year’s theme, A Symphony of Stories.

One of the special highlights was a visit from St Finbarr himself, who made a surprise appearance and delighted students as he shared in our love of stories, learning and community. It was a memorable way to connect our patron saint with the joy and wonder of Book Week.

A huge thank you to Mrs Danckert for her incredible work coordinating Book Week and supporting our classes with their library displays. Her passion for books and reading helped create a week filled with curiosity, wonder and excitement.

Every great story deserves an audience, and this week our students wrote a memorable chapter in the story of St Finbarr's.✨

🎭Lights, Camera, Action! 🎭

Families were treated to a wonderful showcase of creativity, confidence and storytelling as our Prep, Yr 1 and Yr 2 students performed in their drama concerts. From memorable characters and imaginative adventures to plenty of laughter and enthusiasm, our young performers captivated audiences and demonstrated just how much they have learnt in drama lessons.

A special thank you to Mrs Marshall, whose passion, energy and dedication to Drama inspire our students week after week. Through her guidance, students are developing far more than performance skills. They are learning confidence, communication, collaboration, creativity and the courage to step outside their comfort zones.

Well done to all of our performers for sharing your talents so proudly. You truly stole the show! ⭐

🚦 Safety Starts Early! 🚦

Our students had a fantastic time participating in the RACQ Streets Ahead Program, where they became road safety experts for the day!

Through fun, interactive activities, students explored how to stay safe as pedestrians, riders and passengers. They practised identifying hazards, making smart decisions near roads, and learnt important skills that will help keep them safe both now and into the future.

Learning was hands-on, engaging and full of valuable real-world lessons. A big thank you to the RACQ Education Team for helping our students build the knowledge and confidence to travel safely in our community.

Well done to all our young road safety champions! 👏🚸

🎨 Mix It Up! 🖌

At Playgroup, our little learners became mini scientists and budding artists as they explored the magic of colour mixing!

Using the primary colours, children experimented, predicted and discovered what happens when colours are mixed together to create vibrant secondary colours. There were plenty of smiles, curious minds and colourful masterpieces along the way.

It was wonderful to see such a great turnout, with children engaging in hands-on learning through play, creativity and exploration. We certainly have some artists in the making at St Finbarr's! Thank you to our parents and grandparents who came along and joined in the fun. We love seeing generations learning, creating and making memories together in our Playgroup community.
