🎉WE’RE A FINALIST! 🎉

We’re really proud to share that Phluxus2 Dance Collective is a finalist in the Micro Business category of the 2026 Lord Mayor’s Business Awards.

The process of reflecting on 20 years of Phluxus2 has made us incredibly proud, but it has also reminded us that what we’ve built is about more than making, presenting and sharing dance. We’re creating employment, developing artists, building opportunities and contributing back to the sector we work within.

That’s always been at the heart of how Phluxus2 operates. And at the centre of that is Nerida Matthaei, who leads with artistry, ideas and artists first, with business strategy and entrepreneurial thinking supporting the conditions for those things to thrive.

It’s a deliberately interconnected model: creative practice, entrepreneurial thinking and sector impact working alongside each other.

After 20 years, we’re proud to still be making work, creating opportunities and finding new ways for independent dance to have a place in Queensland’s creative economy.

We’re very grateful to our artists, collaborators, partners, audiences and supporters who have been part of that journey.
And very happy to be celebrating alongside the other 2026 finalists.

🌼OCTOBER OPEN TRAINING🌼

Spring has arrived and Monday mornings are calling. This October we’re joined by two brilliant artists who’ll be bringing their unique approaches to movement, creativity and dance practice.

🍀Joseph Lau
Joseph Lau is a choreographic and dance artist working between Australia and the UK. His creative process traverses research across personal and embodied histories, geopolitical histories, economic theories and events, score making, responsiveness and image construction. His class is based on accessing and exploiting biomechanical functionality within the body, working from the ground up to expansive movement that includes moving in and out of the floor. Don’t miss these classes while he is in the country! This is a rare treat!

🍀Grace White
Recently relocated back to Magandjin, Grace is a dance artist and WAAPA graduate whose practice centres around presence, bodily intelligence and intentionality. Her class explores the body as a site for experiencing the present moment and re-discovering the body’s capacities through contemporary technique. Expect floorwork, spinal articulation, momentum, coordination, improvisation and plenty of movement exploration, all grounded in a rigorous and thoughtful approach to training.

🎧CHOREOGRAPHERS GONNA CHOREOGRAPH🎧

We’re welcoming our newest Space Eater, Sarah Hurnall, into the studio this September, working between Thomas Dickson Centre and The Judy. Meanwhile, Neri is pulling at the threads of several new ideas, Bella continues her process, and Jade and Voiiid prepare for a performance in NSW. We LOVEEEE creating space for local choreographers to experiment and discover what comes next.

🎶Sarah’s research explores the nuances of musicality and the intersections between contemporary dance and street dance. Using music as a foundation for improvisation and choreographic tasks, she’ll work with dancers from different backgrounds to investigate rhythm, interpretation and unexpected movement possibilities.

🌅Meet us at daybreak for FIRST LIGHT🌅

We are thrilled to be joining the Brisbane Festival event DAYBREAKER to perform our work First Light. If you are up for an early morning coffee rave, and vibing with us, grab yourself a ticket, and rise and shine.

First Light...before the city wakes, the body listens.

First Light is a contemporary ritual of breath, movement and awakening choreographed by Nerida Matthaei. Drawing on yoga, meditation and contemporary dance, the work moves from stillness into vitality — celebrating dawn, nature and the pleasure of being alive in a body.

This month is special. Training as a form of farewell, and an opportunity to share in an international training phenomenon... yes!
Join us this September for a beautiful month of movement with returning guest artists Nadia Milford and Courtney Scheu.

🌙 Nadia Milford
If you have not heard, one of our most beloved Phluxus family members is heading overseas and these classes will be her last with us - for now. Do not miss this farewell as Nadia invites you into movement as a point of origin — connecting through sensation, imagination and presence. Her class will work with the breath to create space in the body, softening around the bones and using momentum and weight to expand, release and dissolve into flow.

🌙 Courtney Scheu
Did you know Courtney is Australia’s only Certified Gaga Teacher? Courtney returns to the studio with Gaga: Ohad Naharin’s movement language. Through Courtney, Gaga/ dancers invites us to enjoy the pleasure of movement — connecting to body and imagination, awakening physical sensation, agility and power in a welcoming, non-judgmental space. No mirrors. No combinations. Just guided exploration and deep listening.

⏰ WHEN CERTAINTY UNRAVELS, RINSE AND REPEAT, AND SLEEPING BEAUTY SETS AN ALARM... ⏰

This August, the Space Eater studio is a place where fiction slips into reality, socks accumulate, sound interrupts, fairy tales get thorny, and certainty is never quite certain.

Enzo Nazario, Anastasia Vogelsang and Leah Shelton are each diving into new ideas, new processes and strange new worlds. Check it out!

🧐 Enzo Nazario
Enzo is interested in the space between fiction and reality, where everyday behaviour becomes strange and meaning is constantly shifting. Working with text, movement and collective improvisation, he investigates how choreography can emerge through shared instinct and responsive decision-making. Enzo will continue developing Word Bank, exploring unstable theatrical worlds, evolving physical scores and the tension between certainty and uncertainty. Joining Enzo in the studio are Kerrod Box, El Lou and Sarah Hurcell.

🧦 Anastasia Vogelsang
A take two on her 2024 Indie piece [insert name], Anna is inspired by the endless cycle of laundry and the everyday rituals of clothing — the garments that are not quite clean, not quite dirty, the piles waiting to be folded, and the tasks that never end. Collaborating with musician Carl Vogelsang, she will experiment how live-sound can support and disrupt the visual world.

🌹 Leah Shelton
Leah is creating a new solo work Keep Sleeping, Beauty, directed by performance icon Ursula Martinez (UK) and premiering at Metro Arts this November (stay tuned for ticket links). Slicing through the thorny briars of a culture that seeks to tranquilise, restrain and contain women, the work reimagines the fairytale of Sleeping Beauty to examine how the dreams of yesterday have become the realities of today.

🍁 THE RED TREE — TOURING IN TERM 4 🍁

Our stunning dance adaptation of Shaun Tan’s The Red Tree officially premiered in Term 2, performing all across Queensland! We’re excited to continue touring this beautiful production in Term 4. Whether you’re in a metro, regional or remote community, we’d love to bring this work to your school.

Inspired by Shaun Tan’s beloved book, The Red Tree, and choreographed by Nerida Matthaei, this work invites students to reflect on resilience, empathy and the shared experience of emotions, while discovering how contemporary dance and physical theatre can communicate powerful ideas.

Our in-schools performance package is now taking bookings for Term 4. All schools are welcome, and no town is too far 🚘

📑 INTERNSHIP SPOTLIGHT: CAITLIN MURPHY 📑

Over the past few months, we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming Caitlin into the Phluxus2 family as an internship through QUT 💞

From rehearsals and workshops to spreadsheets, social posts and all the bits in between, Caitlin experienced the many layers of life at Phluxus2.

Her internship offered insight into both the creative and administrative sides of running an dance collective, from supporting projects behind the scenes to organising resources, contributing to communications and learning what it takes to keep the projects flowing, and the lights on.
Along the way, she was able to shadow Neri as choreographer on projects with Brisbane Festival, Queensland Theatre and Pramkicker, connect with many of our artists and collaborators, facilitate open training and assist the admin team (Raw and Jill) - all of whom generously shared their knowledge, experiences and ways of working.

💭 Caitlin reflects:
‘Through my internship I learnt about what it takes to run and maintain an arts collective from both behind the scenes and in practice. One of my favourite aspects of the internship was getting to experience so many different settings within the creative process and interact with a range of practitioners who were all open to assisting my own journey.’
