🌱TOUR READY - THE NEXT 14 SECONDS 🌱
Are you a festival or venue looking for award-winning, audience engaging new Qld work? We have got you covered!

Yesterday the team pitched The Next 14 Seconds, our latest tour ready production at QShowcase 2026. We are currently building touring options for 2027 onwards and looking forward to seeing where this work may take us.

The Next 14 Seconds is a full-length ensemble work that draws together dance, theatre, visual and sound design to present an immersive tapestry inspired by human evolution. This work questions where we have been, and where are we going? A concept that inspired the initial development of this production was the scientific speculation that if we were to condense the history of our universe into one 24hr day, human existence would only represent that LAST 14 seconds.
And so, what have we achieved in this time? And If time is all we have, what are going to do with our NEXT 14 seconds?

🙆🏻‍♀️If you‘re interested in programming this work in your venue or festival please reach out. We would love to partner.

📝If you would like some more info, reach out and we can send a 1-pager.

🙋🏼‍♂️Got another project in mind? interested in our other repertoire for adult and young audiences? Reach out and we can share our program.

🍓 SPACE EATER: Bella Gilligan 🍓

June and July was a busy time in the studio for our Space Eaters, with Jade Brider, Nadia Milford and Kerrod Box deep in research mode, testing ideas, following curiosities and allowing new directions to emerge. We are excited to announce our newest choreographer in residence, Bella Gilligan. Bella joined the Phluxus family in 2025 as a dancer in IndepenDANCE.

🌀Bella is exploring letting go, interrogating the tension between staying and leaving. She asks, what happens when novelty dissolves, what compels us to hold on, and for how long? She is inspired by absurdism, humour, and existentialism.

🌟Here is a brief insight into Bella’s process so far. More to come!

💭Have a question for Bella? Post in the comments and she will respond in our stories.

🌱 THE NEXT 14 SECONDS AT QSHOWCASE 🌱

We’re delighted to share that our work The Next 14 Seconds has been selected to pitch at QShowcase 2026, presented by Stage Queensland and QTouring.

THE NEXT 14 SECONDS is an acclaimed dance-theatre piece choreographed by Nerida Matthaei and performed by our incredible ensemble Asher Bowen-Saunders, Jade Brider, Hsin-Ju Ely, Georgia Pierce and Jacob Watton, alongside a team of leading local creatives! In this infinite cosmos our world is a small but beautiful fragment, we, homo sapiens, are said to represent a mere 14 seconds of its condensed cosmic existence. Fourteen seconds; the time it took for Apollo 13 to make its mid course correction before landing in the Pacific Ocean. The time the average person decides if they like how they look in the mirror each day.
Longer than firing a gun and more than enough time to tell someone they are loved...❤️

We cannot wait to pitch this stunning work and together look at where we’ve been and where we’re heading - what will you change in your next 14 seconds?

Heading to QShowcase and want to connect? - PM or comment 📝
Cant make it to QShowcase but interested in more info? - PM, comment or email.

🍁RED TREE TOUR WEEK 3 🍁

Just like that, the team have headed home! The last week of tour saw the team perform and travel to far stretches of the state📍Mt Isa 🚐Hughenden 🚐Coowoonga 🚐Winton
🚐Rockhampton 🚐and home again 🌦️

🌟Fav Moments - Beautiful sunsets viewed through bug-smeared windscreens, high-beams that light up the sky, echidnas stopping traffic, finding wifi at the pub, dinner at “that one place that’s still open”, crime podcasts, the dust arena, learning something new about a friend and the novelty of seeing traffic lights again...

💓Mostly this week was reflective and full of pride for performing with and for so many students, being their first dance performance experience, and remembering the universality of dance. All up very special and we cant wait for our next tour.

WANT THE RED TREE TO COME TO YOUR SCHOOL? PM or email us for details. Touring in Term 4, bookings open now.

🙏Thank you to the legends at Shake and Stir for partnering with us, to Neri for being our creative leader, Jade and Charlie for the utter brilliance, and every school we were able to visit. So much heart!!

🍁RED TREE ON TOUR WEEK 2 🍁

The Red Tree rolled into Week 2 with more red dirt roads, curious young audiences and endless wildlife sightings. This week the team (Jade Brider and Charles Ball) travelled through
📍Widgee 🚐Kilkivan 🚐Duaringa 🚐Woorabinda 🚐Moranbah 🚐 and many stretches of Qld highway between ✨

This week was a joy as we introduce live performance to many children for the very first time - so grateful to be able share dance with these communities. Check out our week 2 highlights!!

🌟 Fav Moment — just everything at Woorabinda. The students completely embraced the experience, especially the puppet interactions and our monster choreography. The kids desperately wanted to touch the red wig… and kept checking if Charlie was wearing one too 😂

🦅 Tourist adventure — another week of incredible wildlife spotting - Eagles, hawks, brolgas, galahs, cockatoos, and even a tawny frogmouth joining the journey. Closely followed by a fierce pool comp on a circular pool table at the accom 🎱 (Jade won… apparently 👀)

🤣 Funniest moment — Jade volunteering for the morning drive twice… and both times accidentally leading the team onto dirt roads 🛻💨 Also the wild dogs attempting to join bump-in and steal our lunch.

💬 Quote of the week —
“A powerful experience that encouraged reflection on resilience, empathy, and shared emotions.” — Downlands College

❤️ A huge thank you to all the students, teachers, and communities who welcomed us so warmly this week and threw themselves wholeheartedly into the performances and workshops.

🌿 Stay tuned to see where The Red Tree travels in week 3, on the road home ✨

🍁RED TREE ON TOUR WEEK 1 🍁

The creative development is done and The Red Tree is out on tour! Week 1 saw the team (Jade Brider and Charles Ball) pack the van and head to Corinda 🚐 Toowoomba 🚐 Moonie 🚐 Dirranbandi 🚐 St George 🚐 and then a few days rest in Rainbow Beach 🌈

So far our young audiences have been loving the piece, and our adventures on tour have been stunning. Check out this week’s highlights!

🐌 Fav Moment - a young thoughtful audience member at Downlands deciding the leaves in the wind represent fate (followed by the kids at Dirranbandi all wanting to pat the bird puppet - shy at first, but then all putting their hands out)

🐟Tourist adventure - a mob of emus running alongside the road, the ever changing terrain, and Carlo Sand Blow.

🤭 Funniest moment - Charlie not realising Jade had put on a face mask while he was driving!

📣 Quote of the week - ‘An inspiring, high-level experience building confidence, creativity, and industry-ready skills.’ — Corinda State High School

♥️A special thank you to the students and teachers who welcomed us so warmly and jumped wholeheartedly into the workshops and performances.

✨✨Stay tuned and let’s find out where The Red Tree will travel to next✨✨

🩵MAY OPEN TRAINING🩵

May brings two distinct and expansive practices into the studio — Asher Bowen-Saunders and Nadia Milford. Both of these artists invite depth, curiosity and body soul connection. Come be part of it 👯‍♂️

✨Asher’s class is a mixed bag of contemporary dance technique, strength conditioning and play peppered with influence from acrobatics and latin forms. In this class you will be invited into improvisational work that works to weave together the body and environment, breathing animacy back into the practice of dance.

✨Nadia, a performance artist exploring belonging to body, people and place, invites you into movement as a point of origin - connecting through sensation, imagination and presence.

🪾Trees, Snails, Tunes and Banners 🐌

This week the team has been hard at work prepping for the final stage of creative development, shaping our adaption of Shaun Tan’s The Red Tree!

Did you know — Neri isn’t only the choreographer and adaptor of this work - but also creating sound, and designing set & costumes. Here’s a little peek into the studio + workshop process 👀

🗣️ Neri shares:
“I’m really excited to be creating this work for young audiences across qld. I worked on a Shaun Tan adaptation a few years ago, and the imagery really stayed with me — the subtext of his worlds and the beauty in the hand drawn landscapes translates into movement so naturally. The Red Tree story speaks to resilience in trying times — something deeply important for young people, and for all of us right now. I’ve loved dabbling in all the roles for this one and even jumping on the drill. I’m really excited for the final stage of play and to premier the work on its first tour in Term 2.”

🍂 Bookings for Term 2 are still available from weeks 2-4
