🌟 Bright Beginnings Talks: Parenting Insights Series 🌟 This month, we’re focusing on The Power of Play-Based Learning. Play isn’t a break from learning. For young children, play IS learning. Every cubby they build, every story they invent, every leaf they sort by colour is quietly building real skills—thinking, problem-solving, language, empathy and resilience.

How play builds your child’s skills:
▪️ Cognitive: sorting, counting, problem-solving, testing what works
▪️ Emotional: naming feelings through pretend play, learning to wait, share, recover
▪️ Physical: climbing, balancing, building fine-motor strength through drawing and craft
▪️ Social: taking turns, negotiating roles in pretend play, learning to read others

Ways to support play at home:
✅ Make space for unstructured play, even 20 minutes counts
✅ Follow your child’s lead, their interests drive the deepest learning
✅ Offer open-ended materials eg, boxes, blocks, sticks, fabric, and water
✅ Resist over-directing, the learning happens when they problem-solve
✅ Notice the thinking out loud, “You’re testing what happens when…”

Why it matters: Children who experience high-quality, play-based early learning develop stronger language, social and self-regulation skills that support them through school and life (Early Years Learning Framework, Australia).
