Here’s a way to use everyday objects to help your students visualise the volume of rain that has fallen in SEQLD in recent days.
We measure rainfall in linear units – mm – not volume.
A rainfall of 1mm is the equivalent of 1L of rain over 1m2 (V = 1mm x 1000mmx 1000mm = 1000 000 mm3 = 1L)
A standard bath towel is 70cm x 135cm = 0.945 m2 (close enough to 1m2)
Gympie has had approximately 240mm of rain in the past 3 days. This is the equivalent of 120 x 2L bottles of milk being poured on your bath towel. Or if you prefer, that is 320 bottles of wine. Can’t imagine that much milk/wine? A standard household bucket holds 10L. So that’s 24 buckets of rain poured onto your bath towel. This is on top of the 71mm they had already received on Tuesday (35.5 milk, 95 wine, 7 buckets).
Toowoomba, 235mm, 117.5 bottles of milk, 313 bottles of wine, 23.5 buckets.
Brisbane 302mm, 151 bottles of milk, 402 bottles of wine, 30 buckets.
Tewantin, 437mm, 218.5 bottles of milk, 583 bottles of wine, 44 buckets.
All adds up to one very soggy bath towel.
Stay safe everyone.
