Our Flying Scientists had a great visit to Dalby earlier this month!

Les Zeller, Dr Sachini Wickramasinghe and Dr William MacAskill were joined by our Young Science Ambassadors Hemanshi Galaiya and Alyssa Peterson for two days of hands-on science fun with local community at the Dalby Events Centre and students at Jimbour State School and Dalby State School.

Students and guests had the chance to meet the Queensland Chief Scientist Professor Kerrie Wilson, see the UQ Mobile Makerspace, and interact with our experts in robotics, 3D printing, engineering, healthcare technology, fossils and more!

Special thanks to Western Downs Libraries for your support!

The Flying Scientist program is run in partnership with the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation.

In November we held our 2025 State Conference!

We were so excited to welcome teams from across the State with over 200 people attending the 2025 Wonder of Science State Conference at The University of Queensland including 180 in-person and an additional 20 zooming in virtually.

Students who have won Regional Conferences across Queensland presented the results of their term-long Challenge Task research projects competing to be State Champions.

Students also participated in workshops on neuropsychology, DNA and water filtration and participated in a speed meet session with our Flying Scientists and Young Science Ambassadors.

Presentations were excellent this year. Well done to everyone who participated and congratulations to our first place winning teams:

Year 4 - Daintree State School
Year 5 - Grand Avenue State School
Year 6 - Mourilyan State School
Year 7 - Stretton State College
Year 8 - St Monica's College
Year 9 - Stretton State College

Special congratulation to our STEM Excellence Award winners - Mitchell State School's Year 8 team.

Thank you to our partners including Arrow Energy, Rio Tinto, QUT (Queensland University of Technology), Griffith University and the Queensland Government (Office of the Queensland Chief Scientist) for making WoS possible.

Next up in our 2025 Regional Conference adventures - Metro Primary and Metro Secondary Regional Conferences.

We held two conferences in late October and early November for our participating schools in the wider Brisbane/Gold Coast metro area. We had a great mix of seasoned returning and brand new schools - so the competition was fierce this year!

Year 4 - 9 students from across the region presented the results of their 10-week research projects, participated in physics and engineering workshops and a tour of UQ St Lucia museums (secondary teams). Students also spoke with Young Science Ambassadors (researchers in STEM fields) from The University of Queensland, QUT (Queensland University of Technology) and Griffith University who visited for the conferences.

Congratulations to everyone who presented on the day AND to our winning teams:

Metro Primary
Year 4 - Stretton State College
Year 5 - A tie! Stretton State College & Grand Avenue State School
Year 6 - Another tie! Grand Avenue State School & Kimberley Park State School

Metro Secondary
Year 7 - A tie! Stretton State College & Upper Coomera State College
Year 8 - Stretton State College
Year 9 - Stretton State College - a tie for both their teams!

Special thanks to Kimberley Park State School for once again being an excellent host for the Metro Primary Regional Conference and to The University of Queensland for providing a wonderful venue for the Metro Secondary Regional Conference.

We would also like to give a huge shout out to Mount Mee State School. As the only primary school in the far north of Brisbane participating in Wonder of Science this year - we held a special mini conference with the Year 5 & 6 students! Well done to the winning teams and thank you for being such a fun, kind and creative group!
