So, what exactly are evidence-based practices (EBP)?

The term 'evidence-based practices' often gets used in school environments, leaving some to wonder about its true significance. Is it merely the latest educational buzzword, or does it represent a transformative force for our classrooms? Let's break it down into teacher-speak: EBP is about making informed decisions based on real-world evidence that certain teaching strategies significantly impact student outcomes. It means moving beyond the "we've always done it this way" mindset and instead asking, "What's the best way to help my students learn?"

As we sift through the vast array of educational products and strategies available, it's essential to arm ourselves with a critical lens for evaluating and selecting EBPs. Here's what you need to consider:

1. Empirical, Peer-Reviewed Research: At the core of EBP lies research methodologies and findings rigorously vetted by the academic community. This peer-reviewed research serves as our guiding star, leading us toward pedagogies, interventions, assessment tools, technological resources, curriculum designs, and professional development programs proven to enhance student achievement and well-being effectively. By grounding our decisions in data-driven evidence, we ensure that every aspect of teaching and learning not only meets the highest scholarly standards but also makes a tangible contribution to educational progress. EBP embodies a dual focus: adopting practices validated by peer-reviewed research to significantly affect student outcomes and continuously evaluating the effectiveness of these practices to steer our journey toward educational excellence.

2. Contextual Adaptability: Recognising the unique characteristics of each school setting is crucial. Effective EBPs must transcend theoretical effectiveness, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability to the specific cultural and socio-economic realities of our schools and communities.

3. Fidelity and Adaptation: Correct implementation of evidence-based practices ensures the integrity of the original research is maintained, yet flexibility remains critical. This balance allows educators to customise strategies to the intricate dynamics of their classrooms, making the implementation both authentic and practical.

4. Collective Efficacy and Professional Growth: Embedding EBP within our educational practices is a shared journey. It requires continuous professional development and a culture of collaboration among educators, fostering a mutual dedication to refining and advancing our teaching methods.

5. Ethical Considerations and Equity: In applying EBPs, we must also consider the ethical implications of our decisions, ensuring our practices promote equity and inclusiveness. This ethical commitment guarantees that every student, regardless of their background, can access high-quality, evidence-based education.

Armed with knowledge and a deep sense of dedication, let's move forward and make evidence-based decisions that not only illuminate our classrooms but also spark our students' potential. After all, isn't unlocking that potential the true magic of teaching?

For all who know me, it's clear that my heart beats to the rhythm of feminist values. Yet, it's also apparent that my beliefs have sometimes been met with less enthusiasm by others. Reflecting on a pivotal conversation I had last year with a younger colleague, who did not share my passion for celebrating International Women's Day, I found myself both disheartened and inspired. Disheartened because she did not feel the weight of the day as I did, but inspired because it signified a shift: a new generation is growing up in a world transformed by the battles fought and won by countless strong women before them.

It's a testament to those who have paved the way, challenging and overcoming obstacles that once seemed insurmountable. Not so long ago, women were denied the right to vote, bound by restrictive societal roles, and faced blatant disparities in education and the workplace. Yet, the issues that once stirred the souls of our predecessors are becoming foreign to young women today, thanks to the strong spirit of those who dared to demand more. For this progress, I am profoundly thankful.

However, the journey is far from over. In the education sector, where the majority of teachers are female, a significant gender imbalance still exists in leadership positions. Despite women making up 80.9% of teachers, they held only 57.5% of principal roles and 76.9% of deputy principal roles (2013 -latest data 😥). Despite the percentage of 19.1% male teachers, 42.5% of school principals were male. While this data needs updating, this discrepancy highlights the persistent underrepresentation of women in higher promotional positions, a reality that clashes with the principle of equality we strive for.

As we all stand together, let’s not forget the work that remains. Let International Women's Day be inspirational, guiding us toward a future where every young woman can inherit a world not just of choices, but of equal opportunities. A world where our daughters will not only dream of leadership but will assume it naturally.

Today seems like the ideal day to share a passion project inspired from my Master of Education studies. A collection of insights, resources, and reflections that I hope you’ll find useful in your educational journey. Although still in the initial stages, my aim is to build an evidence-based content hub that can empower educators with useful resources.

Sold a Story: How Teaching Kids to Read Went So Wrong There's an idea about how children learn to read that's held sway in schools for more than a generation — even though it was proven wrong by cognitive scientists decades ago.
