Book of the Week!

The Dark Waters series is a series of decodable books for those needing to bridge the gap between decodable and mainstream books. The synopsis is: 'Lex’s Grandad has been working on a secret invention, but disaster strikes when he encounters some people intent on stealing it. Luckily, Lex has some new friends and a cunning plan that he hopes will save the day.'

It is a 10-book set of longer stories with a higher ratio of text to illustration to build reading fluency and stamina. Each book provides practice and transference of skills taught in explicit phonics instruction. The books supplement any systematic phonics programme.

Game of the Week!

Phonic Books Talisman Card Games Boxes 1-20 are 10 beautifully illustrated playing card games that offer practice and consolidation of phonic skills for catch-up readers.

Linked to the popular Talisman series of Readers and Activities, these card games will enthuse and delight older, struggling readers as they learn to read. Starting at CVC word level, the sets introduce consonant digraphs and alternative spellings for vowel sounds.

Each game includes instructions, a word list, 42 word cards, 8 magical Talisman cards and 3 blank cards for making additional words. These exciting, fast-paced games make an ideal teaching resource that will re-engage catch-up readers.

If you would like to borrow these or any other games that we have in our library, you can view our catalogue here: https://speld.org.au/library/

Books of the Week!

Welcome to our 'Book of the Week' series where our Speld Qld librarian will recommend a resource from our library each week. This could be in the form of a book, series of books, a pack, a game, or anything else exciting that we have available

First up we have our Rip Rap series. Rip Rap books are used across Australia and in New Zealand and Canada, in schools, homes, tutoring, speech pathology, correctional facilities, adult learning and English as Additional Language Centres.
The Rip Rap novels are written for upper primary and secondary aged students.

The Rip Rap Club Books are the newest in a suite of Rip Rap decodable resources for all students, but particularly for those whose reading skills are delayed. The Rip Rap Club books are designed for primary aged students, from about 7 or 8 to 12 years, though older students enjoy them too. The Rip Rap novels are designed to look like the books that similar aged students read.

With a strictly controlled vocabulary, and introducing digraphs and spelling patterns one at a time, these exciting, often funny, stories build confidence in reading and a solid foundation of phonic understanding.
These high interest, low reading level novels are intended to be read in sequence. Each builds on the skills learned in the previous book. Confidence is built through success and practice of word families.

Calling all Queensland educators! There are still places available in Doug Lemov’s Teach Like a Champion workshop. This workshop will be focusing on: Making Explicit Direct Instruction Work.

Using video from real classrooms, Doug will explore how Explicit Direct Instruction can be dynamic, engaging and highly effective across an entire lesson.

You’ll examine practical techniques including the Alternating Principle, optimising visuals to support learning and combining EDI with Retrieval Practice to strengthen long-term memory.

You’ll leave with:
• A clearer picture of high-quality EDI in practice
• Strategies for keeping explicit teaching dynamic and engaging
• Practical ways to improve the use of visuals and retrieval
• Techniques you can take directly into your next lesson
