"Never see a need without doing something about it." – St Mary of the Cross MacKillop

Today we celebrate the Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop—Australia's first saint and the patron of one of our Iona Houses.

Mary's life reminds us that making a positive difference isn't found in extraordinary moments, but in the everyday choice to love, serve and stand alongside those who need us most. Her courage, resilience and deep trust in God continue to inspire generations of Australians.

As an Oblate College, her witness resonates deeply with our own charism. Like St Eugene de Mazenod, Mary believed that faith must lead to action, especially in service of those on the margins. Together, they remind us that the Gospel comes alive when we reach out with compassion, courage and hope.

Today, may all Ionians be inspired to notice the needs around them and respond with generous hearts.

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, pray for us.

Old Boys Day is underway for 2026, with our current students doing the black and white proud in tennis, basketball and rugby league.

It's not too late to come down and celebrate your part in our history.

The First XIII league game against Padua kicks off at 1.45pm, and you can still buy tickets to tonight's reunion dinner and induction of the Class of 1976 to the Iona Silverbacks.

It is only Round 2, but tomorrow’s First XIII clash between Iona and Padua will go a long way towards deciding who will win this year’s AIC rugby league premiership.

Iona, Padua, Villanova and St Patrick’s all started the season with a win last week, giving them a headstart in the race for this year’s title.

This year’s Old Boys Day is a celebration of rugby league at Iona, as we mark 65 years since ‘the greatest game of all’ was introduced, just four years after our first students arrived on the Hill.

But 2026 also marks another anniversary milestone for Iona league, being 10 years since the 13-player game returned to Iona in 2016 after a hiatus of more than 30 years triggered by Iona’s move into the TAS (The Associated Schools) competition in 1985, where rugby union and soccer were the two footy codes on offer.

To mark the return of Iona to the league field in 2016, the College produced a nice historical piece on the history of the game at the College, featuring some well-known Ionians.

Among them was Graham Quinn (Class of 1970), who was Iona’s first Australian representative in any sport when he was picked for the Kangaroos against the Kiwis for a Test in Auckland in 1980.

Our First XIII will need the support of our old leaguies and all Ionians for their big game on Davine Oval, which kicks off at 1.45pm.

Watch the footy, stay around for the College Tour and Mass, and then join us at the Old Boys Reunion Dinner at Lindum-mere. Tickets are just $70 with beef brisket, pulled pork and sides from the BBQ Roadshow Low’n’Slow.

Our big anniversary year cohorts of 1966 and 1976 are also eligible for a special discounted price of just $55.

Support our boys.
See the sights.
Enjoy a succulent, slow-cooked meal.
