Big emotions can be tough to manage, especially when we are tired. Understanding and accepting ALL emotions (not just the lighter ones) is the first step in learning to regulate them. Naming the emotions you see in an accepting way teaches children to identify them in themselves and others, which in turn builds empathy.
• "You look frustrated.”
• “I understand. You feel safer when you know exactly what's going to happen. Me, too.”
• “That child sounds really unhappy. I wonder why they’re upset?”
Children are often told how to NOT express their big emotions, but it’s just as important to show appropriate ways of managing them.
• If you felt angry at me/a friend, what could you do?
• Do you make a better decision when you’re angry or when you feel calm?
• Did you know that I feel sad too sometimes? It really helps me if I….
Learning how to navigate emotions in healthy ways starts by how it's modelled.

Some days, we can soldier on through sniffles and a clogged-up sinus. Other days, we just need to be home. It's the same for children; a fever, an upset tummy, or that unmistakable feeling that something's not quite right.
When children are unwell, a quiet day with familiar comforts can help their body heal faster than pushing through in a lively environment.
As well as helping to keep our friends healthy and minimising the spread of infection, these rest days also teach children something valuable: listening to your body matters, and sometimes slowing down is exactly what health looks like.

Parent friendships often start in the car park at pick-up time. Someone else's child is also refusing vegetables. Someone else has a car full or rocks and seed pods. Someone else is navigating the same sleep regression, or the same afternoon outbursts. Someone else understands because they're in it too.
Early childhood settings create natural opportunities for these connections to form. You see the same faces at drop-off, share similar experiences, and gradually realise you're not figuring this out alone.
Parenting can feel isolating. Finding like-minded people who 'get it' matters not only for the children's wellbeing and connectedness, but also for our own.

Today marks the beginning of the 40th annual Refugee Week; a celebration born in Australia and now observed around the world! As we celebrate this milestone, we also look to the future:
How can we continue to show compassion to people in need of safety? What more can we do, as individuals and communities, to offer support, empathy, and understanding? And how can each of us show kindness and help people feel they belong?
Lady Gowrie Qld welcomes sharing of stories, challenging of stereotypes, and working together towards a more inclusive society.

How children feel in a space shapes how deeply they can learn. And how they move through their earliest years shapes everything that follows.
Lady Gowrie Queensland's Bribie Island professional development day brings these two ideas together. Dr Geraldine Harris examines how learning environments support children's curiosity, safety, and sense of place. Phoebe Marais and Natasha Sansoni explore how early movement experiences build the neurological foundations for attention, regulation, and school readiness.

This week our CEO Elizabeth Death met with the Hon Di Farmer, Shadow Minister for Education and the Early Years, to chat about all things early childhood education and care in Queensland.
It was a valuable opportunity to discuss the important role the sector plays in supporting children, families and communities, as well as some of the key opportunities and challenges facing early childhood education and care across the state.
We appreciate the opportunity to share insights from the sector and look forward to continuing conversations that help shape positive outcomes for Queensland's children and families.
