Virgin Australia will begin flying from the Gold Coast to Denpasar (Bali) next year, becoming the first airline to fly the city pair. It is a novel piece of adventurism from the Brisbane-based airline, which until recently, has steered clear of international flying and, when it has dipped its toes into the market, has tended to follow other carriers on already well-traversed routes.

Virgin Australia (VA, Brisbane Int'l) has confirmed it has begun temporarily standing down a varying number of frontline employees until the end of October following renewed COVID-19 lockdowns in New South Wales and accompanying travel restrictions.

In an email to staff shared with ch-aviation, Chief Executive Officer Jayne Hrdlicka said the number of people required to work would “vary from week to week” but all affected would be eligible for weekly COVID compensation payments amounting to AUD750 Australian dollars (USD550).

VIRGIN ADDS 10,000 SEATS ON NEW ROUTES TO SKIRT BORDER CLOSURES

Virgin Australia has announced the addition of 10,000 new seats across two new routes ahead of the September school holidays, which skirt the border closures that currently impact the country’s most populous states.

From September, Virgin Australia will fly direct from Adelaide to Launceston for the very first time, as well as re-introduce direct flights between Adelaide and Darwin.

Notably, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory are currently the only three states without major travel restrictions in place, and people can freely move between these states.
