Winter-flowering natives are a welcome sight not just for us humans but also for native insects seeing through the cold months. In the Eastern Australian temperate forests ecoregion, these beauties are the 7/11s and trusty local pubs that stay open all through the "low periods" to keep the punters satiated! Good on you guys!

How awesome are mangroves - like the grey mangrove (Avicennia marina - the taller species) and river mangrove (Aegiceras corniculatum - the smaller ones) pictured here in East Brisbane. These plants are the most effective flood and pollution control agents out there; far cheaper than engineering, far more effective than concrete, far better for climate and biodiversity. We should be replanting and rekindling our support for these communities as they'll be among our biggest allies in the future, especially for river and coastal cities!

And yes, the smell and mosquitoes can sometimes be a bit much, but you can always take up mouth-breathing and long sleeves 😉🤣🌿🌳🫶🏽

One hundred and fourteen species call my native garden HOME 🏡 😍🌿🐛🦜

Bladderworts are among the tiniest flowers but beneath petite grace, they are hungry carnivores. Through a matrix of tiny bladder-like roots suspended in water or boggy ground, they use turgor pressure to trap and consume microscopic invertebrates. Delicious! 😋

The stunning new foliage on Brachychiton sp. Ormeau (an as yet still unnamed species of bottle-tree) is a beautiful addition to any spring garden. The tree is protected under Australian environmental laws as a Critically Endangered species and is only found in one tiny patch in the Eastern Australian temperate forests ecoregion.

The energy of native herbs and grasses after a dose of rain 🌧💪 This is my favourite patch in my garden; colour, wildness and now home to about 25 species of reptiles, dragonflies and butterflies! Before it was just lawn and weeds and nothingness. Go native, let loose, live a little - Indigenous is best!! 🌸🏵🌼
