The Indigenous Queensland Family Cohort (I-QFC) study provides valuable insights into culturally grounded, family-centred research, with the potential to strengthen health and wellbeing across generations.

These findings are now helping to inform the development of a future co-designed birth cohort study for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in Queensland 💜

Did you catch Prof Vicki Clifton, QFC Director, and Jackie, QFC project manager, talk about the team's latest research?

Australia is the world’s food allergy capital, with around one in 10 children living with potentially harmful allergies.

Now, groundbreaking Mater research has discovered that the placenta may hold the key to identifying children at risk of developing allergies — years earlier than ever before.

The study, led by Professor Vicki Clifton from Mater Research, analysed placentae from 366 Australian mothers and followed their children’s allergy outcomes up to age seven.

“Instead of being alerted by a life-threatening event such as anaphylaxis, the study has shown that we can identify children at risk at a much ea
rlier and safer stage,” Prof Clifton said.
