The injury might be obvious. The cold isn’t always. ❄️

When someone is injured on the snow, our attention naturally goes straight to what hurts. But while we’re assessing the injury, that person may be sitting or lying motionless on a freezing surface, and continuing to lose heat.

Cold exposure can quickly become another problem you need to manage.

A few simple priorities:

• Get them insulated from the snow or ground where possible
• Protect them from wind and further heat loss
• Keep unnecessary exposure to a minimum during assessment
• Get ski patrol or other appropriate help involved early

Good first aid isn’t just treating the injury in front of you. It’s recognising what else the environment is doing to your patient.

Pressure doesn’t create capability. It reveals your preparation.

At Deep Breath Institute, we help people develop the practical skills, confidence and composure to perform when it matters, through first aid education, breathwork, apnea training and preparation for challenging environments.

Because confidence isn’t simply believing you’ll cope. It’s knowing you’ve done the work.

Prepare. Perform. Prevail.

Cold. Exertion. Discomfort. A little bit of adrenaline.

All things that can change the way we breathe — often before we consciously realise it.

That’s one of the reasons breathing control is such a useful skill beyond the classroom. Learning to recognise your own response, regain control and make good decisions under pressure transfers into sport, work and plenty of real-world situations.

Today’s classroom just happened to have a chairlift. 🎿

Prepare. Perform. Prevail.

Qualified is not the same as ready.

The difference is often practice: taking a breath, assessing the situation, choosing the next step and acting with purpose.

That is why our first aid and CPR sessions focus on realistic scenarios, practical repetition and supportive feedback. You do not have to arrive as an expert. You just need a willingness to learn and practise.

For individuals, workplaces and community teams across Brisbane North, Deep Breath Institute offers training designed to build genuine capability.

A simple refresher can make a big difference.

If someone is seriously bleeding:
🩸 Make sure the scene is safe
🩸 Call 000
🩸 Apply firm, direct pressure with a dressing or clean cloth
🩸 Keep pressure on and add more dressings if needed
🩸 Keep the person still, warm and reassured

Do not remove a dressing that has soaked through. Keep adding layers and continue pressure until help arrives.

This is general information only. In an emergency, call 000 and follow the emergency operator’s instructions.
