Using resources for sermon prep
For Preachers
A page for preachers Preaching isn't easy! So us preachers need some encouragement! PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ADD SOME COMMENTS OF YOUR OWN. I'd welcome that.
It can be hard work preparing a sermon, and the spiritual battle can heat up for the man who preaches in the power of the Spirit and influences lives. The purpose of this page is to (a) Provide encouragement for preachers, and (b) To be a forum for men involved in preaching ministry so we can build each other up by sharing our thoughts, lessons learned, tips, and simply to be a blessing to others.
"Prayer must carry on our work, as well as preaching. He does not preach heartily to his people who does not pray for them. If we do not prevail with God to give them repentance and faith, we are not likely to prevail with them to repent and believe."
Richard Baxter

An appeal to preachers A key factor in effective preaching
"offering an audience a clear explanation of a biblical passage may be the most important contribution an expositor can make in his sermon." Haddon Robinson
“As God so governs the clouds, that he makes them rain upon one place, and not upon another; so at a sermon the Lord opens the heart of one, and another is no more affected with it than a deaf man with the sound of music.” Thomas Watson
In preaching ministry, there is a time to be gentle, a time to give encouragement, and a time to comfort. There is also a time to risk offending people by calling out a sin that is committed by the members - including the wealthy & influential members.
Good advice to preachers from A.W. Pink: “Let not the ministers of Christ hesitate boldly to deliver their message, nor be afraid of the displeasure of the most influential in their congregations.”
"..expositional preaching is preaching that takes for the point of a sermon the point of a particular passage of Scripture. That's it. The preacher opens the Word and unfolds it for the people of God."
Mark Dever ('Nine Marks of a Healthy Church' p45-46)
A stirring first-hand account by someone who heard the Welsh preacher Daniel Rowland (1713-1790)... "Oh! the striking appearance of the preacher: his zeal, animation, and fervour were beyond description, and such effects descended on the congregation under him as never came within the sphere of observation before."
H.B. Charles Jnr on sermon conclusions: "finish strong. Practice clarity. Use variety. Make it memorable. Strive for an economy of words. Don't ramble. Write it out. Be familiar with it. Think of the conclusion as a lawyer's closing argument. Don't leave any reasonable doubt. Preach for a verdict." ("On Preaciing" p94).
Good advice!
H.B. Charles Jnr on sermon introductions:
"The introduction is meant to grab the congregation's attention. ..The introduction should make the case for why the listener should actually listen to the rest of the sermon." ('On Preaching,' p78)
