This Friday at JMI LIVE: The Rachelle Eastwood Quintet

Hailing from Aotearoa, New Zealand, flautist Rachelle Eastwood has spent the past two years making Brisbane her new home. In this performance, she brings together original compositions and music inspired by the jazz of the 1960s and 70s, exploring the distinctive combination of flute and vibraphone that emerged during this era.

The repertoire draws on the music of Bobby Hutcherson, Charles Lloyd, Milt Jackson and others, alongside Rachelle’s own compositions influenced by this sound.

Joining Rachelle are Brendan Foster on vibraphone, Paula Girvan on piano, Connor Perkins on bass and Lochlan Robinson on drums.

Sinclair's Swingin' Smorgasbord is a 6-8 piece project run by JMI graduate Alyssa Iti Merekara Sinclair, and as the name suggests, the bands musicians and music is forever changing. In contrast to the bands usual form, SSS will be doing a second serve of their 'Swingin' Rom Com' show that they recently performed at the Brisbane Jazz Club, because they all had too much fun to not do it all over again!

A Swingin' Rom Com is about the journey of love and all that comes with it. Following the classic emotional Rom Com movie storyline, but through music, while adding some personal experiences & plot twists in the mix, the show will move between a duo, a quartet & 7 piece mini big band lineup. The band will present a variety of exciting arrangements, some well known classics, and some you may have never heard before, so don't miss out on the second chance to come check out 'A Swingin' Rom Com' with Sinclair's Swingin' Smorgasbord!

This Friday at JMI LIVE: Kaite Chester presents 'Onto Something

Brisbane jazz vocalist, bassist and arranger Kaitlyn Chester presents music from her debut album, Onto Something. Featuring original arrangements and contemporary interpretations of jazz standards, the performance highlights her love of storytelling and improvisation. Joined by her exceptional band, Kaitlyn reimagines classic Songbook repertoire through a contemporary lens.

Recorded in Brisbane in July 2026, Onto Something reflects a period of artistic growth and exploration. The project was shaped in part by Kaitlyn's studies at the Tribeca Jazz Institute in New York City in 2025, where she immersed herself in one of the world's most vibrant jazz communities. A return visit in 2026 further deepened her connection to the music and inspired many of the ideas explored throughout the recording.

Drawing on the Great American Songbook, the album balances a respect for jazz tradition with a contemporary approach to arranging and interpretation. This performance celebrates the release of Onto Something, presenting the music in the collaborative and spontaneous setting where it continues to evolve.

Mike Anderson is a professional guitarist and music educator based in Brisbane. He returns to JMI Live in trio format, joined by long-time friends and collaborators Elliott Parker on bass and Jordan Cant on drums. The trio will explore some of Mike’s newer compositions, as well as some lesser-known jazz standards and compositions from greats past and present. Forever a student of the guitar, Mike has forged a reputation as one of the hardest-working musicians in Brisbane and is currently on faculty at JMI.

The Teabo Fargo Trio are heading to The Ruby this Saturday, continuing the fortnightly JMI student trio residency every second Saturday.

Teabo is a JMI pianist with an ear nurtured by bebop and hard bop, bringing a night of energy, spirit, and swing,drawing on the music of Clifford Brown, Cedar Walton, and Thelonious Monk. He's joined by Alex Askew on bass and Evan J. Evans on drums.

JMI Open Day is back, again! Sunday 11 October, 11am to 2pm at our Bowen Hills campus.

A casual and fun afternoon to come and have a look around. Meet our students and staff, hear about our courses, sit in on an intro to improvisation, and stay for the BBQ and an open jam if you’d like to.

Whether you are considering our new November intake for Summer Semester (more to come on that), 2027 intake, or any of our short courses - this is a great opportunity to come have a chat and see some jazz!

Open to anyone curious about JMI. Year 11 and 12 students, international students, adults considering a return to study, music teachers, parents and partners supporting someone making a decision. Bring whoever you’d like with you, the more the merrier!

The end is never the end is never the end here at JMI Live with the Mason Harvey Quintet! Join Mason as he embarks on an ouroboric journey through his musical life, past, present, and future. An up-and-coming saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and bandleader based in Brisbane, Mason draws inspiration from the likes of Patrick Bartley, John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins. Formed out of his love of the hard bop quintets of the 50s and 60s, the ensemble looks to the past in order to push music forward, valuing creativity, spontaneity, and swing above all else. Buckle in for a wild and exciting night of music!
