This week is National Science Week and the 2026 theme is Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All.

We love this theme at Scotts Road because it describes exactly what we believe about early childhood. A seed of curiosity, given the right conditions, grows into a lifelong love of learning. And the right conditions start in the very first years of a child's life.

Science in early childhood does not look like a lab. It looks like a child watching what happens when they mix two colours of paint. It looks like a toddler dropping objects from different heights and watching them land. It looks like a group of kindy children crouched over an ant trail, asking questions and waiting to see what happens next.

Every one of those moments is scientific thinking. Our educators at Scotts Road know how to read them, extend them, and build on them within our daily program.

Play-based learning is a phrase that gets used a lot in early childhood. What it actually looks like in practice is worth talking about.

It looks like a child spending twenty minutes figuring out why their block tower keeps falling and trying a different approach each time. It looks like two toddlers working out who holds the watering can. It looks like a group of kindy children gathered around something small on the ground, asking questions nobody has the answer to yet.

Our educators at Scotts Road plan every experience with intention. The resources, the spaces, the provocations are all set up to invite children to explore, problem solve, collaborate and create. And then educators step back and let children lead.

The learning that happens in those moments is real and it sticks in a way that directed instruction rarely does for young children. 💛

🦴🔍 Little palaeontologists in the making! Today we made our very own fossils, exploring how fossils are formed while using our creativity and curiosity. 🪨✨

Language development in the toddler years moves faster than most parents expect.

Between 1 and 3, children go from single words to sentences, from pointing to explaining, from watching to joining in conversations. The environment and the people around a toddler during this period play a significant role in how that language develops.

Our Toddler educators at Scotts Road narrate the day, ask open questions, read aloud, and create experiences that give children something worth talking about. The outdoor obstacles, the sandpit, the dress-up corner, the home corner - every space in our toddler rooms is an invitation to use language. 💛

Babies learn through relationship first and everything else follows.

When a baby knows their educator, recognises their voice and feels safe in a space, their brain is free to do what it does best in the early months - absorb, connect, and grow. Secure attachment in the nursery years is one of the strongest predictors of confidence and resilience later in childhood.

Our Nursery educators at Scotts Road work to build genuine relationships with every baby and family in their room. They observe, document and communicate daily, and they adapt the program around each child rather than expecting each child to adapt to the program.

It is a small distinction but it makes an enormous difference.

For working parents, the morning routine is everything.

Being able to drop off children of different ages in one spot, or two spots that are steps apart, makes an enormous difference to the start of a day. Scotts Road Child Care Centre sits directly opposite Darra State School, which means families with children at both can do the whole run without crossing the suburb.

Add easy access from Darra Train Station and the Ipswich Motorway and the location genuinely works hard for commuting families.

Give a child a brush and a blank piece of paper and watch what they do with it.

Painting is a core part of our Kindergarten program at Scotts Road because it builds the grip control, hand strength and coordination children need before they start writing. Our educators make space for it every day.

Outdoor play is a core part of our nursery and toddler program at Scotts Road and families who visit always comment on the space.

Children learn differently outside. They move more freely, take small risks, engage with natural materials and connect with the children around them in ways that are harder to replicate indoors. We protect that time in our daily program because we know how much it matters in the early years.

Solo play and group play teach different things, and our educators value both.

Alone, a child sets the agenda. They test their own ideas, sit with a challenge until they crack it, and build the focus that will serve them right through school. In a group, the learning shifts to people skills. Reading faces, waiting for a turn, pitching an idea ("you be the dog and I'll be the vet") and handling it when the answer is no.

Watch a room of children for an hour and you'll see them flow between the two. That flexibility is exactly what we hope to see.
