When children paint they are making decisions about colour, practising the fine motor control they will need for writing, building focus and patience, and expressing ideas they do not yet have the words for.

Giving children real materials - proper brushes, real paint, space to work at their own pace - sends a message that their creativity is worth taking seriously. We believe it is.

Activities like this are a favourite in our toddler rooms at Scotts Road for good reason. Using tongs builds the hand strength and finger control children need for writing. Sorting by colour introduces early maths concepts. And doing it alongside friends builds communication and turn taking in the most natural way possible.
