🔄 Changing education providers? The waiting period is longer for now.

Since 2 October 2026, Standard 7 of the National Code has temporarily extended the transfer restriction from 6 months to 12 months. It applies until 30 June 2027, and from 1 July 2027 it goes back to 6 months.

What this means for students:

A new provider generally can't enrol you until you've completed 12 months of your principal course, unless an exception applies. If you've completed between 6 and 12 months, you may now be affected
Exceptions still apply, including a provider or course ceasing to be registered, an agreed release from your current provider, or written support from a government sponsor

Check where you stand before applying to a new provider.

🎓 Are there any situations where you can still lodge a Student visa application onshore?

There are. A new instrument that commenced on 2 October 2026 names the students who may still apply for a further Student visa from within Australia:

1️⃣ Doctoral students
2️⃣ Students affected by provider default (apply within 12 months of the default)
3️⃣ Students who need additional time to finish their principal course
4️⃣ Students progressing to a higher-level course

Eligible family members may also be covered, provided they apply at the same time and place as the main applicant.

Each exemption has its own detailed conditions and sits alongside the other application requirements, so confirm you meet them before you lodge.

From 2 October 2026, if you hold certain temporary visas, you must be outside Australia when you apply for a Student (500) or Student Guardian (590) visa.

This applies to holders of visas such as:

Visitor (600) and eVisitor (651)
Working Holiday (417) and Work and Holiday (462)
Temporary Graduate (485)
Skills in Demand and Temporary Skill Shortage (482)
Training (407) and Temporary Activity (408)
Other listed subclasses

Lodging onshore from one of these visas means the application isn't valid and can't be assessed. Review your visa subclass and stream before you commit to a course.

📢 Student visa applications now work differently, and the changes began on 2 October 2026.

The Migration Amendment (Student Visa Reform) Regulations 2026 tighten the rules for anyone lodging a Student visa application on or after that date.

Here's the summary:
✅ Existing Subclass 500 holders who want a further Student visa will generally need to apply from outside Australia
✅ Family members can only be added if an exception is met, and they need to apply at the same time and place as the primary applicant
✅ The onshore option for applicants whose Student visa ended within the past 28 days has been removed

Defence students, Foreign Affairs students and school students are among those who can still access exemptions. Anything lodged before 2 October 2026 is not affected.
