We were thrilled to receive the Education Partnership award at the annual Peter Doherty Awards for Excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) this week. It is wonderful recognition of our work over the past 21 years inspiring Queensland students to continue their STEM studies and connecting them to careers in the resources industry.

Thank you to the people who have made this award possible: Our team of STEM Engagement Educators (past and present); QRC members; industry partners and government stakeholders. 👏

We were also excited to see three Year 12 students connected to the QMEA also received awards - QMEA student ambassadors Tom and Seth, and GIRLS mentoring program graduate, Mayling.

You’re a fabulous QMEA Student Ambassador, Jake! Thank you for sharing your experience at the media launch.

📢The QMEA's second regional hub, in Rockhampton, was officially launched this week. Announced by Dale Last - Member for Burdekin and Ros Bates MP the hub is great news for schools, students and the resources industry in Central Queensland.
QRC CEO Janette Hewson said the Rockhampton hub follows on from the successful implementation of a regional hub in Mackay.

"This hub will give more students access to QMEA workshops and programs which link their classroom studies directly to careers in the resources industry and we want to attract the next generation of STEM professionals to keep our industry thriving."

QMEA Student Ambassador, Jake Lucas from The Cathedral College, attended the launch and reflected on the benefits of being involved in the academy. "The QMEA has given me a deeper understanding of the resources industry and the confidence to follow my career aspirations into the sector after school."

The Rockhampton Hub STEM Engagement Educator, Jillian Neyland, will be based out of CQUniversity Rockhampton North campus.

🪨🔍 From rocks to resources!

Secondary students in Cloncurry gained a fresh perspective on the mining industry during a hands-on STEM workshop led by a mine geologist, Alisha from South32 Cannington Mine.

Exploring how rocks are formed and minerals are discovered, the Year 9 and 10 students uncovered the science behind critical minerals industry right on their doorstep in north-west Queensland.

Science + Industry = Discovery 🧪✨

Year 10 students from Kirwan State High School rolled up their sleeves for a recent STEM Unearthed workshop packed with experiments linked to chemical engineering, copper extraction and how these processes are used in the resources industry.

Wal from Glencore Queensland Metals joined the workshop, sharing valuable industry insights and giving the experiments a real-world context. Our QMEA Student Ambassador at Kirwan SHS, Rhianna, was also there to give the students a hand.

As one student reflected at the end of the workshop: "Today I learnt there are a lot more careers in mining than just driving trucks."

🙋Where would you rather be - in a science lab doing a STEM experiment or in the workshop doing a trade project❓

Students at Capella State High School didn't need to make the choice, with a combined STEM/Trade workshop giving them the best of both worlds. The students did half-day workshops with trade experts and professionals from Glencore Coal Australia on hand to assist them complete a full rotation of activities related back to processes used in the coal mining industry.

It doesn't matter if you prefer a 🔨hammer or a 🔬microscope - with QMEA workshops we've got you covered!

Year 12 students from across Queensland gathered in Brisbane this week for the finale of the Girls in Resources Leadership Skills mentoring program. The students had the opportunity to meet with their industry mentors and reflect on the many benefits of the successful program targeting young women keen to have professional and trade careers in resources.

It isn't just the students learning from the QMEA - teachers do too! 👨‍🏫👩‍🏫

Five teachers from Millmerran State School had a fabulous professional development opportunity recently – touring the local Millmerran Power Plant, kindly facilitated by the team Genuity's Millmerran Power.

Heath Commens guided the teachers, providing valuable insights into the plant’s operations. The tour included an overview of the coal-fired power generation process, visits to key areas of the facility, and an inside look at the control room, where teachers learned how the plant connects to the National Electricity Market.

The teachers also chatted with site employees about career pathways into the power industry, giving them valuable information to share with students keen on exploring future careers in the sector.

The tour gave the educators a better understanding of the power industry and is sure to help them bring real-world science from the local community back into their classrooms.
