...Topic Tuesday, let's talk about nail clipping.
Now, I know this something some people struggle with and I can understand why. Let's break it down.. From my experience and knowledge.

Nails - They are continuously growing, not only do they grow fast. They can become a problem and start to curl if left unclipped for a certain period of time. This can cause trouble to walk, more like to scratch or cause more damage to another guinea pig if in a fight etc. Once nails do curls they continue to curl and can curl into the paw pad.

Qwik - The qwik is the part of the nail that has the blood vessels. Its best to only cut the ends off and not cut into the qwik. Otherwise this can lead to a lot of blood. Which can be slowed/ stopped with a dub of some cornflour.

Spurs - Spurs tend to grow off the paw pad. But do sometimes confuse others in thinking they could be an extra nail. They however have no feeling to them and no blood vessels. You can cut it off close to the paw pad and the rest will drop off. This is usually caused from a build up.

Guinea pig - This is the biggest one, the guinea pig themselves like to be very dramatic and make nail clipping hard. This can be followed by wheeking loudly, screaming the house down, pulling feet away making it harder and much more. The best way is to find a comfortable position and cut at a quick speed and reward with food after. This way over time they see it as something they will get food after. If this is something you are not comfortable doing. You can go to a vet, rescue etc.

Tell us, what does your guinea pig do and how do they react when you clip their nails?
