YEAR 8 AND 9 WELLBEING INCURSION – CHARACTER BUILDERS

Next week on Wednesday and Thursday, our year 8 and 9 students have the exciting opportunity to engage in an incursion at school with an incredible company coming from Brisbane, Character Builders . Over the two days students will participate in a program that fosters teamwork, communication skills, responsibility, self-confidence and resilience. This program has been covered by the Student Resource Scheme and would usually cost over $60 per student.

Character in the Middle Years – Building Foundations for a Bright Future

Starting high school is a wonderful time in any student’s life. It’s a moment of excitement and transformation, stepping up from being one of the younger kids in the playground to becoming part of something bigger, older, and ready for the teenage years ahead.
But with this change comes a mix of physical, emotional, and mental growth. Navigating this rollercoaster means learning to become more comfortable with self, while also giving ourselves permission to be comfortable around others.
It means creating space where we can be authentic, and where others feel safe to do the same.

At Character Builders, we believe these understandings don’t just happen by chance. They need to be explicitly shared, taught, and experienced in intentional learning environments. Educators, parents, and mentors are time poor more than ever, and schools are stepping up wherever possible to help reinforce positive character development in youth. That’s why we take our work so seriously.
That’s why we operate with passion, intent, and a deep focus on supporting schools to provide an incredible journey for students in their middle years.

The Journey Through the Middle Years
The middle years, typically Years 7, 8 and 9 are a time of remarkable growth and transformation. Each year brings unique challenges and opportunities, and our programs at Character Builders are designed to nurture students through each step of this journey.

Year 7 is all about belonging and connection.
Students are navigating a brand-new environment with different classes, teachers, subjects, and social circles. They’re learning to adapt, manage their time, stay organised, and build new friendships.
Our programs help them find their feet and feel at home in this exciting new chapter.

Year 8 is a time when resilience and self-awareness take centre stage.
Friendships evolve, commitments change, and students are learning to balance increasing workloads with extracurricular and social activities. It’s a time to reinforce self-belief and to learn that challenges are opportunities to grow.

By Year 9, the picture becomes even more complex.
Students are developing rapidly, physically, emotionally, and mentally. It can feel overwhelming or confusing at times, but it’s also one of the most important stages of becoming.
This is where Character truly steps in, helping young people realise that what your mind creates, your character can control.

What We Encourage Students to Remember

1. Lean on Each Other.
The greatest support comes from those walking the same path. Know your peers, stay open to new connections, and be someone others can count on.

2. Embrace Growth.
Every challenge is an opportunity. Rather than focusing on what’s hard or how others perceive you, look for what’s working. Turn obstacles into learning moments and problems into solutions.

3. Trust the Process.
You’re not supposed to know everything right now, and that’s perfectly okay. Growth can be messy, uncomfortable, and unfamiliar, but it’s all part of becoming who you’re meant to be.
These years set the stage for everything that follows, deeper friendships, greater responsibility, and the confidence to give back to your community and step into the wider world with strength and purpose.

In the middle of all the change, one constant remains: Character.
Character is who you are when no one’s watching. It’s your moral compass, guiding you when things feel uncertain, when judgment is all around, and when choices really matter.
When students and staff unite around the shared goal of building character, through empathy, courage, respect, and self-awareness, school communities thrive.
