Our resident magpies have become increasingly confident and comfortable within our L+C environment. Their presence has brought great delight and curiosity for many of our children, while for others, it has understandably created some apprehension or even fear, particularly where they or a family member may have had a negative experience with swooping behaviour in the past. To support the children to feel safe and confident, while also learning to coexist respectfully and harmoniously with these beautiful native birds, educators have been exploring magpies with the children in a variety of age-appropriate ways. This has included reading stories, engaging in group discussions, observing, and talking about the magpies in our environment, and even working together to create a class story about our very own resident magpies.
Through these experiences, children are developing an understanding of magpie behaviour, why birds may sometimes act protectively, and how we can respond calmly and respectfully when sharing our environment with wildlife. These conversations also provide valuable opportunities for children to express their feelings, ask questions, and develop confidence in situations they may initially find uncertain. To further extend this learning through play, we have purchased five beautiful replica toy magpies for the children to incorporate into their imaginative and dramatic play experiences. These resources will allow children to revisit their observations, recreate experiences, explore different scenarios, and build familiarity with magpies in a safe and playful way.
Through education, conversation, and play, we hope to nurture not only the children’s confidence around our resident magpies, but also their respect and appreciation for the wildlife with whom we share our environment.
