The group is deliberately kept small so that I can work personally with participants and help you develop the palpation and clinical skills needed to use the system with confidence.

What a fabulous group of acupuncturists to spend Sunday with at our Morningside clinic in Brisbane learning Integrated Structural Alignment (ISA).

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who travelled from interstate and overseas to be there. That kind of commitment means a lot, and it was wonderful to have you all in the room together.

And a very special thank you to Professor Bethrene for everything happening quietly in the background — coordinating, filming, organising and somehow making the whole day feel effortless.

We spent the day immersed in Integrated Structural Alignment (ISA) — the distillation of more than 40 years of clinical experience, drawing from Traditional Bonesetting, Trager, Bowen, Jin Shin, Sacrocranial Technique and BodyMindTune.

Over those years I’ve had the opportunity to test, question, refine and simplify. You begin to recognise what consistently works, what creates meaningful change, and what can simply be left behind.

That process became ISA.

It doesn’t replace acupuncture. It gives you another way of seeing, feeling and working with the body.

Through movement, bonesetting principles, transverse work and elongation of the musculoskeletal and connective tissues, practitioners begin to recognise structural patterns differently — while still seeing the person through the relationships of meridians, organs and the elements of Eastern Medicine.

And one of the things I love most about this work is its immediacy:

Assess. Treat. Reassess. Feel what has changed beneath your hands — and notice what can shift for your patient in just 15 minutes.

Once you experience that for yourself, you naturally begin to imagine where it could fit into the treatments you already give.

Because ISA is something you need to feel rather than simply watch, I deliberately keep every training small — just 8–9 practitioners — so there is time to practise, ask questions, receive individual guidance and really begin to make the work your own.

A huge thank you to this wonderful group for the curiosity, happiness, openness, presence and enthusiasm you brought to the day.

Now comes the really enjoyable part — take it back into clinic, keep practising, keep noticing, and discover what ISA can add to the way you already treat.

AACMAC 2026 — Award-Winning Neoclassical Acupuncture Presentation

I’m pleased to share my full AACMAC 2026 presentation on Neoclassical Acupuncture at Foundation level, including clinical reasoning, palpation-based assessment and a live clinical demonstration.

The presentation received the AACMAC 2026 Award for Best Presentation on the Classics in Contemporary Practice.

Well, this was a lovely surprise!
I was very honoured to learn today that I had won the Best Speaker Award for “Transformation into Modern Practice” at AACMAC for my Neoclassical Acupuncture (NCA) workshop.
For me, this was particularly meaningful. It’s been around four years since I first started advocating for greater recognition of NCA at AACMAC. Slate Burris presented NCA remotely from Mexico last year, which was an important step, and this year I had the opportunity to demonstrate the method clinically and show practitioners how we actually use it in everyday practice.
NCA asks us to revisit some much older ideas within Chinese medicine and Chinese cosmology — particularly the six-element model — and bring them into a modern clinical system based on diagnosis through palpation, the one-needle method, and immediate feedback from the body. It represents quite a paradigm shift from the way many of us were originally taught acupuncture,
What I enjoyed most at AACMAC was the response from the practitioners in the room. There was genuine curiosity, lots of questions and some great discussion about how NCA can be incorporated into everyday clinical practice.
And yes, I did talk a little too fast at times — I knew I was doing it!
I had originally intended to keep the workshop fairly focused: demonstrating how the Water and Metal points can open four meridians with one needle, exploring the clinical significance of the Back-Shu and Front-Mu points, treating those findings through the Yuan-Source points, and showing how we locate the six elements on the torso through palpation.
Once I started palpating, however, I ended up demonstrating many more of the obstacles and findings through the torso than I had originally planned. There was simply so much clinical information I wanted practitioners to actually see and get a taste of within the hour available — without turning an AACMAC workshop into a full NCA course!
That interaction with the practitioners in the room was probably the most rewarding part of the whole experience.
Receiving the award afterwards was completely unexpected. For me, it feels like recognition not just of the workshop, but of the value of keeping our profession curious, evolving and open to revisiting older ideas and finding clinically useful ways of applying them in modern practice.
A very big thank you to Slate Burris for his friendship and for guiding my understanding of NCA over the past five years, and to Bryony O’Callaghan, Bethrene Laurenson, Peter Gospos and the AACMAC crew for their support.

Hello everyone,

My name is Dr Mark McAuliffe and I am the authorised Neoclassical Acupuncture instructor for Australia and Oceania.

I have worked in allied health since 1980 and have been in continuous clinical practice for more than four decades. I am a former Senior Lecturer of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and currently practice at Mackay Acupuncture Natural Medicine in and Morningside Acupuncture Natural Medicinein Brisbane

I began studying Neoclassical Acupuncture with Dr Slate Burris in 2021 and was immediately impressed by its simplicity, precision and emphasis on direct feedback through palpation. Since then, and 20000 patients later NCA has become the primary system I use in clinical practice and the foundation of my teaching.

This group has been created to support practitioners in learning, discussing and refining the principles of Neoclassical Acupuncture. Whether you are new to NCA or have been studying for some time, I encourage you to ask questions, share clinical experiences and contribute to the community.
