Hi, I'm Kylie. Founder of The Dirt Collectors & Australia's leading dorodango guide.

I've helped 200+ makers turn a handful of dirt into jaw-dropping mirror-shine spheres

Can you make glass out of dirt? 🪞✨
Spoiler: yes. Also, spoiler: I’ve made this look easy after way too many failed, chalky, unglamorous attempts. 7 stages, weeks of drying, zero kiln required — just dirt, water, and stubbornness.

A painter friend saw my dorodango a while back and asked if you could paint on them.

My honest answer? I have absolutely no idea. But I’m very keen to find out.

I gave him one; he’s yet to report back. So I took matters into my own hands.

The answer is a massive, resounding YES.

And oh, the places we can go. The boundaries just got a whole lot wider.

Have you tried this? Because I feel like we need to talk. 👀🌿

Two million views. Mostly because everyone thought I was holding dog p**p. 😭

The manly ass hands guy, the spoon and hope incident, and the moment I realised my clay ball has a reputation problem.

If you’ve ever looked at a handful of dirt and thought — what if?

This is for you.

Hikaru dorodango is one of the most quietly addictive things I have ever done with my hands. The clay is cool and smooth. The motion is repetitive in the best possible way. And somewhere between the crumbling and the polishing and the waiting — something miraculous happens.

It shines.

Not a little. Like, actually mirrors-the-sky shines.

And then you put it on its stand and you look at this thing you made from a bag of clay and you think — I did that. With my hands. From nothing.

That feeling doesn’t go away. Trust me, I’ve made hundreds of them.

Forming Your Core
Everything depends on this step being done right.
In the bag or outside? I prefer outside — you get better control. But it dries faster, so move quick.

Small bits. Compress firmly. Squeeze out all the air.
Dense foundation = shiny finish later.

Rush this? You’ll pay for it later.

This is the most relaxing and satisfying craft I’ve ever tried.

Cast your mind back 3 hours ago, this pretty blue ball was a bag of clumpy mud — no kiln, no fancy tools, just hours of patient polishing until it could reflect your beautiful smile back at you.

200+ makers worldwide are already doing this from their kitchen tables. Want in? Link above ⬆⬆⬆
