*We're also open after 4pm for one-to-one tuition where needed.

The holidays are an AMAZING opportunity to catch up on missed sessions from throughout the term, make intensive catch-up gains in specific conceptual content areas while the time's available, and in the case of Seniors, prepare for that all-important upcoming end-of-year assessment and externals in just a few short weeks of a very short term.

Like much art, we all benefit from and enjoy the contributions of the written word, but the skill of the contributors isn't always valued in education, especially in the age of an emphasis on STEM.

I am a strong believer in the power of Written Expression - to move, to inspire, to educate, to inform, to provoke joy or to insist on action. Our learners don't always feel that way. Like many concepts, the Curriculum renders writing a prescriptive task, ham-strung by conformity. Unlike other concepts made convoluted and confusing, though, Written Expression tackles a creative practice. As my friend Dylan, a highly-respected teacher of English in a Northside Brisbane school says, 'Curriculum kills creativity'.

At Taggart Tutors, we run Written Expression workshops 3 times a week to address precisely this need. We help learners to develop an awareness of how to funnel their ideas into Curriculum-criteria expectation, and still feel creatively expressive. Of course we build the fundamentals of language - punctuation, grammar, spelling, and figurative literary devices. But we do this so that learners are free to truly build on their own ideas, to select vocabulary reflecting their creativity and to learn HOW to do this.

Writing isn't just 'a task'. It's a transferable skillset in communication and creativity for life. And to have the confidence and the knowledge to express yourself in a written form? That should by a joy.
