Just one more sleep! 🥳🫟💫

Tomorrow in partnership with Bulimba Community Centre we bring The Together Table to the Bulimba Community Markets to build community and build wellbeing through creative connection. 

We have 100 wooden tiles that nest in a large wooden frame, brilliantly and generously made by Marcus Bree from Little Building Co 

All materials are supplied on the day. No experience necessary. All you need to bring is yourself, exactly as you are.

Thoughtful Thursday 💡

When a child asks, “Which one should I use?” or “What should I do next?” it’s natural to want to give them an answer (especially when we’re under the pump! Am I right!?!) 

But often, what they need is time and space to decide.

Those little creative choices are about more than colour, materials or where something should go. Each one gives a child the chance to discover: I have ideas and I can make choices. I can change my mind and I can trust myself.

We can still offer materials, possibilities and encouragement, while leaving room for their thinking to stay in the work.

Try putting two materials side by side and asking: “How do you think these could belong together?” Then pause and give them time to decide.

Creative confidence might just grow in those little moments when a child thinks: “I think I’ll try this.”

What if… A pocket full of “random stuff” is actually a collection of ideas, memories and careful observations…?🪨🍂✨

Before asking a child to put it down, what if we pause and look twice? Their treasures can tell us something about what they notice and taking those treasures seriously communicates: Your way of seeing the world has value.

Mrs Royle has been in Tasmania for a week and you can bet her pockets (and her suitcase… 🫣) are full of treasures she’s collected in her travels! 😂🧳

Thoughtful Thursday 💡

When a child asks, “Is this right?” what they may really be asking is:

Is it safe to trust my own ideas? Can I do this my way?

Creativity doesn’t always need more instruction. Sometimes, what it really needs is permission.

And not permission as in “You need my approval before you can begin.” But permission as in removing the fear that there’s a “wrong way” to begin. Green-lighting their wonder. Their desire to choose, change direction, experiment or make something unexpected.

When a child gets the green light to follow their own creative instincts, they’re learning: “I can trust my ideas.” That’s so much bigger than just learning how to make art. It’s feeling safe enough to wonder: “What if I try this?”

Could that be where creative confidence begins?

Imagination rarely looks neat, sensible or convenient. 😂 (IYKYK)

• It may arrive as a stick that must come home from the park.
• A cardboard box you were planning to recycle.
• A detailed explanation about the family of invisible creatures now living beneath the table.
• Or a paint-covered scrap of paper your child insists is extremely important.

To adult eyes, these things can look like mess, distraction or unfinished work.

But look again.

A child may be building a world, testing an idea, solving a problem, developing a story or giving form to something only they can see.

We as adults don’t always need to improve the moment by suggesting what to make next. Sometimes our most valuable role is to pause and say:

“Tell me about what is happening here.”

Something as simple as that can communicate right to the heart of a child: “I see your idea. I’m interested in your world. What matters to you matters to me.”

Children are already fluent in wonder. Perhaps our work, as adults, teachers, parents or carers, is to notice it before we accidentally tidy it away.

In our school holiday painting sessions, we work in layers. 

Working in layers teaches children that an artwork doesn’t have to appear all at once or be perfect on the first attempt. They learn to slow down, observe what’s happening, build depth, make adjustments and allow an idea to evolve over time. Each layer becomes another opportunity to experiment, solve problems and respond to the work that’s unfolding in front of them.

We are a child-led studio, but that doesn’t mean learning without guidance. We can offer feedback, share techniques, ask questions and open up possibilities while the child remains the artist, the one making the choices and deciding where the work will go. The adult provides the scaffold. The child leads the way.

Thoughtful feedback can support this process without taking ownership away from the child. Rather than telling them what to add or change, we might ask: What do you notice? Is there an area you’d like to explore further? What would you like us to see first?

As they build each new layer, they’re building more than just a painting. They’re developing patience, persistence, confidence and trust in their own creative choices.
