Here is the thing language teachers don't tell you

Some languages you learn might feel like a cheat code🧠
and others feel like a final boss.

One of my favourite concepts to teach is language transfer, and I want to tell you about my first-hand experience in today's post.

————

To begin with,
✅ Positive transfer = when language you already know HELPS you learn second language faster.
❌ Negative transfer = when language you already know actually gets in the way.

Here's how it played out for me personally:

I’ve learned many languages since I was 6 – English, Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese. I’ve been facing “lean-on-the-chair” ease till approaching uncomfortable challenges through those languages.

🇨🇳 Chinese really felt like home.
Because as a Thai speaker, the grammar (SVO) clicked immediately, and vocabulary overlapped. I achieved HSK5 in 3 years and was working with Chinese customers shortly after. Positive transfer doing its best job.

🇯🇵 Japanese? A completely different universe.
I walked in with 2,500 Chinese characters and thought I had a head start - but it didn't work that way. Japanese grammar rewired my brain entirely. It took 5 years to reach JLPT N2, and I successfully came out the other side as a professional interpreter and translator.

🇻🇳 Vietnamese was pure joy.
It's a perfect combination of Thai and Chinese. SVO grammar, overlapping vocabulary - I wrote a medium-length essay within 4 months and had a presentation with confidence. That's positive transfer at full speed.

🇬🇧 English is my love-hate.
Asian languages don't prepare me for ending consonants, and moving to Australia meant retraining my ear for accents I'd never heard before.

So what does this mean for YOU learning Thai? 🇹🇭

If you speak English, you'll find Thai grammar patterns surprisingly logical once someone explains the system properly. What will challenge you are the 5 tones, because English has none.

That's where negative transfer kicks in, and that's exactly where having a linguistics-trained teacher makes the difference.
