After 30 years we are still celebrating Yellow Day, raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation and remembering how Yellow Day started.
Rhys attended Hillbrook Early Learning Centre, sadly passing away from leukaemia in 1994. Yellow was his favourite colour so we now celebrate Yellow Day every year with lots of yellow craft, we decorate Rhys' tree with yellow ribbons and we all wear yellow. The Hillbrook Anglican School students come down to join in the fun and also run fundraising activities throughout the day.

National Reconciliation Week is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our commitment to reconciliation and showcase how we embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture into our weekly programs.
The week commemorates highly significant dates, and we acknowledge these with age-appropriate explanations and activities that allow our children to process our past, present and future and learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history.
We explored stories and books, flora and fauna, had excursions to significant cultural landmarks in our community and extended on all these through role play, art and research.
The land that Hillbrook Anglican School and Hillbrook Early Learning Centre is built on was once Aboriginal campground, inhabited by the Turrbal people, the traditional owners of Brisbane. Enoggera Boys Home was built in 1906, which housed many children, some of which were the Stolen Generation, before being demolished in 1978. Hillbrook opened in 1987 and we’ve been on a continuous learning journey ever since!

We have lots of enthusiastic learners at Hillbrook Early Learning Centre who learn through hands on, play and interest-based experiences. We understand that letter recognition is a foundational skill crucial for early childhood development, serving as the gateway to literacy and early exposure to letters fosters language acquisition, cognitive development, and communication skills.
So, we decided to make our own literacy resources with salt dough and some letter stamps. The children made the dough, measuring and mixing, and choosing the colours. Our children now use these by filling in the letters with beads, counters and use their fingers to trace the letters.
When children create their own resources, they experience a profound sense of empowerment and ownership over their learning journey, which is what we're all about!

We had a very special visitor today, Aunty Christine, from Gubbi Gubbi country. Before we started, we all acknowledged the Turrbal and Yuggera people, the traditional custodians of Enoggera. Aunty Christine explained that Gubbi Gubbi country neighbours Turrbal and Yuggera country.
Aunty Christine brought lots of interesting artefacts and shared stories, songs and dances with us that her family had shared with her, about animals, controlled burning and bush tucker. Aunty Christine talked about the importance of looking after the land and the ways we can do this- taking only what we need from the land, burning to rejuvenate and protecting habitats. We learnt some Gubbi Gubbi words for some of the animals we know and talked about their importance to the Gubbi Gubbi people.
Aunty Christine emphasised the importance of family and showed us pictures of her grandmother who was a very special person to Aunty Christine.
We’re looking forward to welcoming Aunty Christine back to Hillbrook Early Learning Centre in October, when we’ll explore the story behind ochre and create some wonderful art together.

A very special person in our Hillbrook community, Leisa Bye, came to visit us today to read us her book, “What Do You Like To Do?”. https://amzn.asia/d/3g83oLq
Leisa’s book explores identity, respect for diversity and the importance of following our interests, which reflects our philosophy at Hillbrook Early Learning Centre.
As well as an author, Leisa is also a musician (Leisa has played guitar at our Christmas concert for many years) and a committed fundraiser for many charities. On Friday, Leisa will be shaving her head at Hillbrook Anglican School to raise money for Australian & New Zealand Sarcoma Association (ANZSA) and Melanoma Institute Australia. If you would like to donate, please see the links below.

Our ANZAC day program includes sharing stories and having conversations focusing on acknowledging our soldiers of past and present, and showing gratitude for their help. We also explore concepts such as bravery and unity and the meaning of the ANZAC day march, wearing poppies and the dawn service. Our families, children and educators are invited to share what ANZAC day means to them, creating a safe place to share memories and culture.

Children grow so fast so community recycling makes so much sense! Our Clothes Swap at Hillbrook Early Learning Centre provides our children and families the opportunity to be involved in circular economy, and the clothes that are left go to Picabeen Community Centre

Book Week at Hillbrook Early Learning Centre
Books are a big part of our days at Hillbrook ELC for children of all ages. We recognise the unlimited benefits that reading with children brings for development in all areas The theme this year is “Dreaming with Eyes Open”, which the children interpreted as using imagination to create stories.
The children embraced the theme and came up with some great project ideas, including the creation of a giant book, written by them. You can find it in the Early Learning Centre foyer and it’s full of stories and pictures for everyone to enjoy. Children also brought in their favourite books to share with their friends and came dressed up as their favourite book character.
