💫 Meet the Team 💫
We're thrilled to introduce our Early Childhood Teacher - Melisa
Hello, my name is Melisa. I am originally from Spain and have lived in London for 13 years. I recently moved permanently to Brisbane with my Australian husband and our daughter Valentina who also attends Little Harvard three days a week.
I hold a Bachelor degree in Early Years Education as well as an International Montessori Diploma and have 15 years experience as an Early Childhood Teacher.
I see Early Education as a preparation for life. I understand that children learn in different ways and at different paces. This is why I personalise my educational approach to suit each child. My role as a teacher is providing children with a well prepared learning environment, materials and guidance to learn to do and think for themselves. I view children as born learners who are capable and willing to teach themselves when given independence and provided with the right stimulus.
I support children in choosing meaningful and challenging work that captures their interest, leading to engagement and a sense of responsibility encouraging them to be active members of our Little Harvard community.

💫 Exploring Emotions 💫
Over the last few weeks, our Toddler-Kindergarten children have been diving into the vibrant world of emotions with the help of a book called The Colour Monster!
Through the book, they’ve been learning how different feelings can be represented by colours. But the adventure didn't stop there! They collaborated to create their own Color Monster and emotion jars, each filled with their unique interpretations and reflections.
It was a fantastic way to visualize and discuss feelings, helping them understand and express their emotions more clearly.

✨ Independence ✨
Yesterday our Senior Toddler - Kindergarten children were given the opportunity to spread their own toppings on crackers for afternoon tea. This simple experience offered them an opportunity to exercise autonomy and agency, learning essential skills in the process. As they navigated choices and used different spreads, they developed fine motor skills, practiced decision-making, and gained confidence in their abilities. It’s amazing to see how such hands-on experiences foster independence and practical learning.

🪐 Solar System Painting 🪐
Our friends in our Toddler-Kindergarten room went on a space adventure today! They sat together and had a discussion about the different planets, their names, and what they look like. They then got busy using paint to create their own solar system. And what an incredible solar system they created!
During this experience, the children got to use paint to further their understanding of the world. Using paint brushes, also supports them in their developing fine motor skills and to explore their ever growing creativity!

🎨 Edible Paint Exploration 🎨
There was fun to be had in the Nursery room as the children were provided with the opportunity to explore some edible paint. There was smiles, and curious looks all round!
Painting and sensory exploration offer incredible benefits for babies! Engaging with paint helps develop fine motor skills as babies grasp and manipulate brushes or their fingers. It also stimulates their creativity and imagination. Sensory exploration, like feeling different textures, enhances their sensory development, helping them understand and interact with their world. Plus, these experiences provide a fun, interactive way for babies to express themselves and build cognitive skills. Overall, painting and sensory play are fantastic for fostering early development and joy!

We’d like to introduce you to our Leader of Learning, our Centre Director - Sharne
Sharne comes on board with 18 years of experience in Early Childhood Education.
Heres a little glimpse of Sharne’s personal philosophy:
“I believe that the first five years are so important, the growth, learning and development that happens during these years is so crucial to setting children up to be lifelong learners. I see children as strong, capable, powerful learners and believe that as adults, we have so much to learn from them, by spending time with them and seeing the world through their eyes. I believe that children should be provided with inspiring, nurturing, rich environments, that support them to explore, inquire, be curious, problem solve, connect with their peers, be themselves, start to build their understanding of the work around them, and above all, have fun.”

A Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) is a roadmap for childcare centres to continually assess their performance, identify areas for improvement, and set goals to enhance the quality of care they provide. Here's a breakdown of what a QIP typically entails:
Self-Assessment:
The QIP process starts with a thorough self-assessment. This involves evaluating the centre's performance against national or regional quality frameworks, such as the National Quality Standard (NQS) in Australia.
Educators, staff, and potentially parents might be involved in this process through surveys, focus groups, or direct observation.
Identifying Areas for Improvement:
Based on the self-assessment, the team identifies areas where the centre can improve.
Action Plan and Implementation:
An action plan outlining specific strategies to achieve each goal is developed.
This includes assigning responsibilities, allocating resources, and outlining a timeline for implementation.
Staff training, curriculum modifications, or environmental changes might be some potential strategies.
Monitoring and Evaluation:
The QIP is a living document. The team regularly monitors progress towards goals, gathers data through various methods, and evaluates the effectiveness of implemented strategies.
This allows for adjustments to be made if needed.
Communication and Transparency:
The QIP process should be transparent. Parents and families should be informed about the centre's goals and progress.
This can be achieved through newsletters, meetings, or online platforms.
Benefits of a QIP:
A well-developed QIP helps childcare centres:
Provide the best possible care and education for all children.
Meet regulatory requirements and quality standards.
Attract and retain qualified staff.
Demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement.
By following a QIP process, childcare centres can create a dynamic and enriching environment where children can thrive and families feel confident their children are receiving high-quality care.
