There’s a big difference between knowing how to do a calculation and knowing **when** to use it.

For one of our Year 3 students, the next step after building her addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills was tackling word problems.

She learned to highlight the important information, work out what the question was asking and choose the right strategy.

And then she solved it correctly. 🙌

That growing confidence is showing up elsewhere too, from calculating change to making sense of fractions and becoming a more fluent reader.

When a child is struggling at school, it can be hard to know what will actually make a difference.

More practice at home? A learning app? Extra support at school? Tutoring?

So we went straight to the people who work with children and learning every day.

Across six Australian primary teacher groups, we asked teachers what they believed was the most effective avenue of support for a struggling student.

The result was remarkably consistent.

**73–82% chose one-to-one tutoring with a teacher.**

Parent-led extra homework received just **0–1%**.

Because sometimes a child doesn’t need *more* work. They need someone with the training and experience to work out where things stopped making sense, explain it another way and adapt their approach to the child in front of them.

An hour-long tutoring session might look convenient on a timetable, but for a younger child, an hour of focused learning can be a lot.

That’s why tutoring at Attain Education doesn’t have to follow a one-size-fits-all schedule.

For some of our younger students, we can split their tutoring time into two 30-minute sessions across the week instead. It’s one of the ways we adapt tutoring to suit the child, rather than expecting the child to adapt to tutoring.

That flexibility is also part of our commitment to making learning fun. Our qualified primary school teachers use games, activities and plenty of encouragement to keep children actively involved in their learning. Shorter sessions can give younger students more opportunities to practise, experience success and build confidence while they’re engaged and ready to learn.

If your child keeps mixing up fractions, the first thing to check is whether they actually know what the whole is.

A lot of confusion starts there. Halves, thirds and quarters only make sense when your child can see what they belong to.

Try this at home with a sandwich, pizza or piece of fruit. Ask, “What is the whole?” before you talk about the parts.

Sometimes progress looks like something that used to feel confusing starting to make sense. 💜

For Stella, one of those wins has been telling the time.

She started out working on reading analogue and digital clocks, and with targeted practice, her understanding has come a long way.

Now she can tell the time **to the minute** and use those skills to tackle word problems about time too. 🙌

And that’s just one part of her progress.

She’s also building her spelling skills, learning to add more detail to her writing with adverbs and strengthening her understanding of concepts like symmetry, fractions and measurement.
