This Friday, 20 March, we will acknowledge Harmony Day. Harmony Day is a national celebration that recognises and celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity, promoting the message that everyone belongs. It is an opportunity for schools and communities to reflect on the values of respect, inclusion and belonging that help make Australia such a vibrant and welcoming place.
Students are invited to wear something orange on the day if they wish, as orange is the official colour of Harmony Day and represents social communication and meaningful conversations.

PHILOSOPHY CORNER

Here is a simple, fun way to spark richer conversations at the kitchen table, in the car, or whenever you have a spare moment.

Would You Rather Questions:

• Would you rather visit the past once or the future once?
• Would you rather see like an eagle or smell like a dog?
• Would you rather witness the building of the pyramids or the first moon landing?
• Would you rather control water or control weather?
• Would you rather live without electricity or without books?

DECK DELIGHTS

For many children, the playground is a highlight of the school day — a chance to run, play, and connect with friends. For some students, however, the playground can feel a little overwhelming. The noise, movement, large groups, and fast pace can make it difficult to know where to go, who to join, or what to do.

Some children thrive when they have a quieter space, a smaller group, or a clear activity to focus on. When the environment is calmer and expectations are clearer, it can help students feel more confident, regulated, and ready to engage socially.

This is one of the reasons "The Deck" has become such a valued part of break times at Buranda. It offers a predictable, welcoming space where students can enjoy quieter games, creative activities, and gentle social interaction at their own pace.

By providing different options for play, we help ensure that every child has a place where they feel comfortable, included, and ready to enjoy their break.

Welcome to Deck Delights, a little window into one of our most loved spaces at Buranda. The Deck was created a few years ago as a quiet, structured alternative to the playground during lunch and break times. It’s a welcoming space for any student who prefers a calmer environment, enjoys quieter activities, or simply needs a place to pause and reset. With games, drawing, and quiet activities on offer, The Deck is much more than a chill-out zone — it’s a space where friendships grow, confidence builds, and real social learning happens every day.

Our Year 1/2 students have been exploring the importance of the sun for all living things. They learned how the sun helps plants, animals and people, and then had lots of fun creating their own sun prints to see its power in action. What a bright and creative way to learn!
