NAVIGATING SPORTING PRESSURES 24/04/2025

As the school and representative rugby seasons approach, I have had a lot of discussions with parents and their children about the best ways to approach trials, particularly regarding dealing with pressure and setbacks (amongst other things). I thought it best to summarise my thoughts in a blog post (a first for me!). I hope this is even a tiny bit helpful to those reading!...

THE ART OF SELF-COACHING 24/04/2025

As a private rugby coach, I find it important to also teach my clients how to self-coach, as it is important that they know how to respond when their coaches or mentors are not around to help! This requires an element of self-awareness, which is a skill that can be learned. The art of self-coaching is, in my opinion, a three-step process:...

STAYING FIT OVER THE EASTER BREAK

To maintain or continue to progress with rugby fitness through the Easter break, it’s important to keep up our running training. This might look something like this:

1. Steady and slow long distance run, between 3km and 10km, once or twice per week. Aim for a pace between 5:30min/km to 6:30min/km depending on age and base fitness.

2. Moderate intensity tempo runs - 3 sets of 10x 50m runs at 70%-80% of max sprint pace. Do this once or twice per week.

3. 5x broken broncos (20m/40m/60m returns are one rep) - do this once or twice per week.

The aim is to get a good balance of aerobic (long distance, slow pace) and anaerobic (short distance, high speed) running training as rugby requires both! 🏉

Wishing the Gunn Coaching community a happy Easter 🍫 🐰

I will be having a break from weekend field coaching for the foreseeable future - I’ve finally bitten the bullet and gotten some long term damage to my ankle surgically repaired (three guesses which sport caused this 🏉). I’ll be in touch with all usual clients once I’m back running around.

In the meantime, I am still conducting game reviews for juniors & seniors (in-person and video analysis). In recent years I’ve had very good feedback on the positive impacts the review work can have for players, especially at the front end of the season while ironing out technical errors etc. Please let me know if you need any assistance!

Two of my long term clients Chayce and Max enjoying one of their last club rugby games for the season a couple of months ago! I was there conducting a review of their game. Hope everyone is enjoying the post season break - not long until we go again! 🏉

Check out my latest reel for some insight into my one-on-one sessions. Jack has been training with me over several years now. We’ve focused on all parts of his skill-set and he’s seen some great improvement and recognition in representative selections. Send me a DM or go to my website link in the bio if you want to book a session! 🏉

We’ve got a big block planned for our pre season and a big job for all our coaches to enhance each and every individual that attends so that they become better players and more skilful so that they can contribute to their team and reach their potential.

Most of the coaching panel at C2K are guys who played mostly in the 90s, some in the 80s and some in the 2000s. One thing about Queenslander’s is that we love giving back to rugby and most of our coaches played during the crossover from amateur to professional and bring the ethis of the era with them.

We have two young guys who stick out and share that same ethic of giving back in Tom Kibble and Michael Gunn.

These two guys are in their 20s and fresh from playing at the highest levels all the way up to the Reds squads. They offer so much in recent experience and knowledge and will be on board. Their breakdown + defensive work are superb and they just smash it. Michael also does his own personal coaching Gunn Coaching ( ) is available outside C2K.

We are so looking forward to getting back into rugby and going by registration numbers we should have 100s of hungry youngsters eager to learn and embrace the new season of development along their journey.

See you Sunday!
