How much can change in two years? As we all know, a lot can! 2020-2022 has been a period of great change and challenge!

We have been reflecting a lot on the past two years especially because reflection is how we adapt, grow and move forward.

Reflecting on the impact of music for us, we can definitely see how music has been invaluable to the process of recovery. People who experienced increased negative emotions due to the pandemic were found to engage with music primarily as a way to regulate depression, fear, and stress, especially via music listening. People who reported more positive emotions overall were found to use music largely as a replacement for social interaction. Not just music listening, but also music making gave them a sense of belonging to a community (World Health Organisation). Making music, moreover, served as a method for self-reflection.

We feel so privileged to continue to provide a service that brings joy, a sense of belonging and achievement to our community.

Hi everyone, I’m Daniela and I have been a violinist my entire life! It’s one of those things that you don’t realise can be with you for a lifetime when you first begin. As a child, I remember enjoying the challenge of figuring out how to play a particular passage. I learned patience, resilience and most of all a love for beautiful things through music.

Now as a musician and teacher, I especially value the opportunity I have to play music and continue to figure out challenging passages, not just for myself but with my students as well. Of course, there’s nothing like celebrating with a fun music recital at the end of the year which includes helium balloons and other exciting treats!

Is there a place where you can express everything inside, feel as curious as your five year old self, yet see progress through each day?

Music is that place for me, every practice session, I learn something new about myself, time slows down and I can slowly focus on building up something new, one movement at a time.

If you’re not sure whether your child would be interested in starting music lessons, perhaps attend a concert together, buy a toy instrument and watch how they interact with it. Another great option is taking them to a music store to hear and try out an instrument.

"My favourite piece of cello music? That is a really hard question to answer!" Liz says with a laugh and a sigh.

It's always hard to choose one when there are so many good ones! One of Liz's favourite pieces of music for cello is the Elgar Cello Concerto in E minor. It is beautifully poignant, dramatic and yet rich in colour and expression.
