Don't miss out on the fun activities we have planned for LEAP (Language Early Access Program) in Term 4 2026! 🎉😍

LEAP is a bilingual, bicultural program, based in Perth for children aged 0-6 years old who use Auslan and/or spoken English! The program is open to Deaf and hard of hearing children, CODAs or children who have a Deaf family member/s.

Held weekly on Fridays during the school term, every LEAP session has a different theme and activity! This term we have a range of exciting activities, including our end of year party. 🌟

Deaf Connect is proud to confirm that the Brisbane 2032 Olympics Emblem reveal will be Auslan interpreted, and captioned.

Deaf Connect will be providing interpreters for the launch event which will be held on Monday 5 October (a public holiday in Queensland) in Southbank. The event will feature the reveal of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Emblems!

Stage 3 of the Video Relay Service (VRS) National Rollout to 24/7 service has officially begun. This means that you can access VRS Monday through Friday 24/7, and Saturday and Sunday from 8am - midnight. You can use the NRS and VRS to make phone calls for anything! For example, you can organise next weekend's plans with your family, make an appointment with your doctor, or renegotiate your internet bill. The NRS is free and confidential to use.

🧏 Sign language & AI announcement

You may have seen Google DeepMind’s recent announcement about new sign-to-text technology, initially being developed for ASL.

We’re excited to share that Deaf Connect is a member of Google’s AI Sign Language Advisory Committee (AISLAC).

AISLAC brings together Deaf organisations and experts from around the world to help shape how sign language AI develops.

For us, that means bringing Deaf perspectives to the table – asking difficult questions, sharing community perspectives and helping make sure Deaf people, language and culture is considered from the beginning.

So, what does this mean for Auslan?

Google has indicated it intends to expand its technology to additional sign languages over time, including exploring applications for Auslan.

We’ll continue to be part of these conversations, with more work underway in Australia that we look forward to sharing more in the future.
