Lower back pain… why do we have it and what can we do about it?
Firstly, we need to assess your daily routine and the positions you are in to help determine if you back is sore due to overuse or inactivity, or if there is an underlying injury.
Inactivity can look like staying in the same position for long periods throughout the day, very common for those with sedentary jobs or limited movement ability. If you are inactive, we would start looking at how we can increase movement and activity levels in your daily routine, as well as assess your movement ability to identify areas of weakness and stiffness. This will outline the exercises we would focus on to improve movement, strength, and decrease stiffness to improve your pain.
Overuse can look like high levels of repetitive movements or lifting heavy loads with poor form or limited rest. If you are overusing your back, we would start looking at your movement technique and identify strength capacity. Following this, we would then look at what muscles and structures aren’t pulling their weight during movements to see why the back is overcompensating. This will outline the exercises we would focus on to improve your movement mechanics, strength of supporting muscles, and decrease load on your back to improve your pain.
If there is an underlying injury, this is where we look at what movements cause aggravation of pain, what movement is pain free, and identify weak muscles and overcompensating muscles. We will work within the identified movement limitations to improve function and strength of supporting structures to decrease pain. A diagnosis can sometimes be helpful if an underlying injury is suspected, however, the movement ability and pain present is always important to identify how to improve your function, pain, and increase your quality of life.
